These aren't just for children. My mom has dementia and all meds are now locked away for her safety. I refuse to take chances when the ways to prevent accidents take seconds to implement.❤❤❤

When I was 4, I ate an entire bottle of candy coated benadryl and was hospitalized for 3 days after getting my stomach pumped. Good job on the locks 😅

This is such a great post While I don’t have children or grand children (Iam 65) this is another outstanding public service. Thank you from all the families that will be spared a tragedy

The lock bags for leafy greens and medicated candies are great. I make sure to use these to keep my grand babies safe. Plus in my family we dont hide it, but i also dont smoke inside so its about communication and education plus safety measures just like any other dangerous items. Locks, education, communication and safety ❤❤❤❤❤

My aunt was a behavior pediatrician at a teaching hospital. I was visiting during Christmas break and remember her saying she had told a group of med students that the holidays are when kids are most likely to come to the ER for overdoses. Grandparents visit with meds in non-childproof containers and the grandchildren get into the Grandparents medication.

I had a medical safe bolted to our bathroom wall for all medications. Worked great. What I learned is my guests used to try to get into it when using the bathroom but an alarm went off if a wrong code is entered. The embarrassment my guests would have exiting the bathroom with the alarm going off was something! The frantic attempts of them trying to shut it up and not wanting to come out was interesting. I was shocked that most adults did it, but kids rarely did.

Learn so much from you. My little is 32. Just sharing that your knowledge & practical perspective is ageless. I can apply it to myself & aging parents.

My son ate 8-10 adderall (80-100mg). He heard me say something about needing to give him his meds, so he thought he was being helpful. Came downstairs with the blue dye from the pills all over his face, which is how i figured it out. One call to poison control (they are SO nice and helpful) and one trip to the ER later, and he was fine.

We have this Master lock and it's wonderful!
We also changed a turning closet door knob to a front door turning knob that requires a key to get in.. it's for important and/or dangerous things.. from social security cards to weapons (further stored in a fingerprint/code safe) to Christmas & birthday presents.
We rented a house for 2 years while I was in medical school & we changed the closet door knob to the locking one & we just switched it back when we moved out! It was super easy. The landlord could not have cared less.
We helped a friend change theirs in an apartment & they had no trouble either!
We also have a plan for if the boys ever need to hide from an intruder or something - we put them in there & they lock it from the inside. They don't come out until we (or law enforcement) unlock it. One key is hidden in my bedside fingerprint safe at all times & the other is hidden wherever.. we have to move it when they see us get it or put it back. (For the record, they're not banned from it & it's not some magical mysterious place they're dying to get into... they just know they can't go in unless we're with them)

We bought one of the lock boxes for meds years ago when we became foster parents. Such a helpful way to store things safely

Doctor, you bring much kindess and practicality to this! My Mum, a practicing Internal Medicine Doc, used to have a locked, small office we kids called the "dangerous room". She simply wanted to add those layers of protection in, so that pir developing brains wouldn't be tempted to mess up. Small doses of acetaminophen, aspirin, and throat lozengers were available of we needed them when we got home from school or sports practice.

What a great idea for parents of children of all ages!!! I hope moms, dads and grandparents do this because we all that sometimes kids can be influenced by friends, or for many reasons.
I didn't keep alcohol in the house and I never had medications that I had to hide. ❤❤❤

"This is not good kids vs bad kids". Yep, even good kids can encounter bad ideas, and often bad ideas arrive in sheep's clothing (and the school yard & internet are rife with them). Kids (and too many adults) often don't have the judgement or particular knowledge to recognize a bad idea, especially if it comes from someone they consider/expect to be more knowledgeable.
My high school's electronics class nearly got shut down because some kids had taken bits & pieces (resistors & whatnot) & told kids from the nearby primary school it would look cool if they put them in a power socket. Luckily one of them spoke to their parents before any did it.
