Precious Pup Abandoned by Owners Who Threw Her Out When They Saw Maggots on Her Tumor [STORY BELOW]

We found Holly in the dead of night as the wind blew cold. She was covered in maggots, even inside her mouth, as a painful mammary tumor that had gone unchecked plagued her. This sweet girl lay curled up, trying with all her might to stay warm. She was on the brink of death, and had we not discovered her right when we did, she probably wouldn’t have made it to dawn.

Knowing that time was of the essence, we scooped up this precious little girl, who was trembling all over, too cold and in agony to be still, and gently placed her in our transport carrier, then RUSHED to the clinic. We could tell by her gums that she was critically anemic, and considering the maggots already making themselves known, we knew that death was her next destination if we didn’t stop the train she was on. As we caressed her little head and drove through the lamp-lit streets, we couldn’t help by seethe at the people who left her in this condition.

Considering how anemic she was, our brave boy Leo stepped up to donate some of his blood so that she could live. The doctor hooked Holly up to life-saving fluids and pain meds and then performed a blood transfusion. We have already lost two beautiful dogs this season and couldn’t bear the thought of losing another; we were on the edge of our seats to see if Holly was going to make it. We couldn’t help but be worried since we found her in shambles. The doctor said we had to get her stable first before even addressing her tumor. We are so thankful to Leo for donating blood. His selflessness gave Holly the chance she desperately needed.

The following day brought a mix of anxiety and hope as Holly was finally strong enough, and the doctors said she was able to undergo surgery. Our dedicated veterinarians worked meticulously to remove the enormous tumor, spayed her, and ensured that all remnants of the maggots were flushed from her mouth, where vets suspect they were just because Holly was likely licking the tumor, and maggots had traveled from it and into her mouth. As she emerged from surgery, we were filled with relief—Holly had made it through.

Now, in her recovery, Holly is showing signs of resilience. She is regaining her appetite and strength, and you can see the comfort slowly returning to her eyes. While she still faces a bit of anemia, we are hopeful that with proper nutrition and care, she will fully heal and thrive. It has been a whirlwind the past few days, and we are just now getting the time and energy to write this.
