LER #298 I spotted another retro PC at the market this weekend. For some reason I'm attracted to anything with an AGP slot so you all know what happened next, yeah?

Hi Richard, I enjoy watching your videos. It looks like you created a solder bridge when you were touching up the cut legs on the second to last capacitor at 23:41. Obviously it doesn’t matter because the motherboard works fine.

Another beauty. Those are going to come in handy soon. Hold onto them

Very interesting video, as usual, thanks. One different but effective way to clean the holes for a new component is to use a set of desoldering needles. They are hollow, fit the right size hole, and are stainless so no risk of them ever being soldered in. Just melt the solder, poke the right size needle in, then wait a second while the solder sets. Then when you pull it out there is a clean hole to put a new component in. They are very cheap. Thanks for your videos. Reminds me of my old family holidays in Fuerteventura, too. Lovely spot. Never made it to Gran Canaria, though.

2:07 - capacitor under your right hand, between inductor and black heatsink, exploded or damaged. (Comment written at moment of watching video.)

Who buys these computers? I mean, they are not really retro, nor are they fast enough for modern use. Is there a market for such devices where you live? Or do you buy these devices for the video?

The Athlon XP 3000+ has a clockspeed of 2.2GHz! - The "3000" is AMDs way of comparing it to Intel speeds.
You can always look it up on the cpubenchmark website.

NOD32 is apparently the antivirus system. I have occasionally managed to get a hard drive reworking by spinning it back and forth horizontally in my sometimes works if you really need the data. Worth a try.

ESR meter won't help, if failing short. Also, capacitors can leak, damaging a board extensively, with good esr, and no doming. Makes me wonder if better to routinely remove electrolytic caps after ten years.

Hi richard you can also put the new capacitor back without desoldergun just warm the pads and. Put the new one trough like you remove them i do it always so also on psu boards.

Hello, this is unrelated question but my Amacrox 550w ATX PSU has a problem, whenever I shorted out the green wire (also the green wire's voltage is only 3V unlike other ATX PSU which is 5V) to the black wire the fan slowly starts when I measured the output voltage on each rail, it is 3.2V for 12V rail and 1.8V for 5V and 3.3V is 3.3V. Now when I loaded the 5VSB using a 30 ohms 7 watts resistor the voltage rails normalize, loading the voltage rails at 5-10% drops the voltage.

When will you make updated thermal microscope video showing current flowing?

Was about to chuck a donated one out -I’ll see what it is. Thanks for heads up. Any reason for not switching it on /seeing what’s within before taking apart?

How do you get away with buying all this stuff, without the Mrs complaining, my dearest darling has eye's on her like a hawk.

Putting untested chinese crap caps is asking for trouble. Never do this
