When I listen to Midnight, I am instantly transported to my youth in the 1980s. It brings back the sentimentality of the era—synths evoking and augmenting emotions, particularly in movies. That's why the videos pairing their songs with 80s movies make so much sense. At the time, synths were thought to evoke coldness, but almost always, they did just the opposite: they took you away into a nearly hypnotic state of reverence. All the while enforcing the 80s aesthetic of leg warmers, neon lights, and max headroom-esque techno-vibes. As a kid then, this combination made the movies feel like they were made in a different world, depicting a faraway place I would never visit except from a movie seat. And yet, it always left you longing to be in such a sophisticated, complicated, exciting world. I remember watching Body Double in my late teens and thinking, is life really like this?
