Look Up It's Here! Jupiter Is Now At Its Closest To Earth

Jupiter is at its closest to Earth as the planet has reached its opposition.

A superior planet is said to be at opposition when the Earth comes between the planet and the Sun. From the viewpoint of Earth's surface, during opposition, the astronomical object rises in the east as the Sun sets in the west, placing it and the Sun on opposite sides of Earth. Jupiter's opposition occurs every 13 months, making the planet appear larger and brighter than any other time of the year. Since Jupiter, just like other planets, goes around the Sun in an elliptical orbit, its opposition does not always coincide with its closest approach. The gas giant will make its closest approach to Earth on the night of 1st- 2nd November, when the distance between the Earth and Jupiter will be 370 million miles or 595 million km. That's one of the closest approaches to Earth in decades.

Then, Jupiter will reach opposition on November 2-3 at 5 GMT or 12 a.m. CDT, bringing Jupiter opposite the Sun in our sky. Jupiter's last opposition was noteworthy as the planet was at its closest to Earth in over 70 years, at 367 million miles. So, Jupiter will be slightly further away this year, but that would hardly make any apparent difference.

I spent countless hours observing Jupiter at one of these close distances between 2001 and 2006. I would have to look at my journals to see what year. At moments of good seeing while observing through my 10" Newtonian, I observed details of Jupiter comparable to large observatories. I also observed the Galilean Moons as disc with the differences of shades of color and detail; although the detail was minor it was still amazing. I also observed the motion of the Galilean Moons like "little planets " as they passed the the edge of the disc of Jupiter. I recorded these observations in my journals in detail. I'll never regret doing so because I don't have the vision in my eyes I had in my youth. Now is the best time to take your telescopes for Jupiter people!

I was fascinated watching the full moon last night & did see a bright star near it. I thought it was just a star & didn’t give it much attention. Just came to know this morning that it is Jupiter. Don’t know anything about the skies but I will definitely look forward to seeing it tonight.

No wonder! I thought I thought the app was mistaken when I looked up to the sky on Friday, and the star map app told me that bright object was Jupiter. Great video as always.
