Vestigial Structures | What are Vestigial Structures?

Vestigial structures are fascinating. Darwin predicted them and they continue to be discovered in species all over the world.
Comment with videos you want me to make!

Disclaimer: I shouldn't have used the word useless when referring to these structures and some have been found to have a purpose. These structures simply don't function as they did in our ancestors (or how they do in our close evolutionary relatives). The goal of this video is to help students understand the concept of vestigial structures, not make a definitive statement about these structures in particular.

You might find it interesting to know the "vestigial" bones in the whale are essential for its procreation.
These bones are connected to several muscles and are fundamental to reproduction.
The vestigial argument is a serious error in the ideology of evolution.

Short, sweet, and to the point. I thank you for this video and look forward to any more videos you have on the topic of Science.

the human "tail bone" is actually what allows us to sit down and that bone system you pointed out in whales is where all of their reproductive musculature attaches, I think we need our Coccyx and whales probably need their reproductive musculature, so can we really call these vestigial?

I have seen a lot of people make the comments that these vestigial structures do serve a function and therefore flawed. This is because the videos author did a poor job with trying to oversimplify the definition (no offense). Vestigial does not necessarily mean useless or ceases to serve function. This is also a term used to describe structures, commonly regarded as "vestigial", that retain lesser functions or may have become adapted to new roles in extant populations (Oxford University, 2002). Diminished, lessened, and rudimentary roles to that of which they were once believed to play.
Hope this helps provide a little more context.

Great explanation to just get over the None Major Bio class. I respect people's beliefs and just want to thank you for a brief to-point video.

Do you prefer background music or no background music?

You need your tail bone. It holds several muscles you need. Goose bumps help in cold weather and .There are no vestigial organs.
