I’ve lived in both countries for the last 9 years. Both countries are amazing with great culture history people and foods. For the average westerner Thai people are more aligned with them in terms of driving, eating habits and etiquette. Thailand is also more convenient for banking, shopping and a range of food choices. Overall you should holiday in both countries but for easier living it’s Thailand imo

I just returned to Bali from Hanoi a few days ago. I spent time in Ta Van, Sapa and Hanoi for just 2 weeks. The internet varied depending on my location but all the restaurants and hotels I was at worked quite well. Food was inexpensive, as you mentioned, but I didn’t eat street foods from any food carts because I just got over Bali belly before I departed for Vietnam. I read of tourists having the same problem as what can be found in Bali. If I visit Vietnam again I definitely would choose the southern area of Da Nang and Hoi An. That was my third time visiting Vietnam.

As a employee, our company has some business in Vietnam that why I have to often go there mostly every one or two months. I would say the healthcare system is the difference thing between those two countries especially in the rural area, even the big city Thailand is on top.

Depends if you are a rich or poor digital nomad. Depends on how far you are willing to give up in life comfort and making changes in adaptations to the new culture. If you are ready jump in completely and let loose without caring for the infrastructures and accessibility in then Vietnam might be the place to bring that excitement.

Last year I tried Vietnam after years of travelling to Thailand. Main difference for me was the people and the street food. Never got sick on Thai street food but in a 10 week visit to Vietnam I was sick with severe food poisoning 3 times. The people are no where near as friendly in Vietnam and in Nha Trang in particular was a place I couldn't wait to get out of. I was also robbed in Vietnam of $600 and my credit card. Thailand all the way for me thanks.

I love Vietnam beautiful country and culture. We are just about to enter Tet [New Year ] most workers get a bonus normally one months wages, but then everything doubles in price, so you give the bonus money straight back to the Corporations so sad. Maybe the workers will wake up to this one day..

Thailand is about 15 years ahead of Vietnam in term of GDP, infrastructure, healthcare, and tourism products. So for now i think it's better for digital nomad to stay in Thailand. Though Vietnam is closing jn Thailand fast, very fast. Even the Thais are aware the Viet might surpass them soon. In 10 years the video will be different.

As frequent traveller to Vietnam and retiree in Thailand, I hope Vietnam will not introduce the long stay visas. Over tourism there already. You can apply the Vietnam tourist visa for the extension theoretically, while it takes forever. Even the tour agents and immigration officers recommend a visa run to Laos or Cambodia. It takes only one day.
