What is an Exponent & Powers of 10? - [5]

In this lesson, we will explore the concepts of exponents and powers of 10. An exponent is a shorthand way to expressing multiplication. The exponent itself tells how many times to multiply the base number times itself. This allows us to express very large numbers and very small numbers in a better and more useful way for calculations in science and engineering. A power and an exponent are two words that mean the same thing. Powers of 10 are just exponents applied to the base number 10. We are very interested in powers of 10 because our number system is a base 10 system, and because of this, powers of 10 are how we keep track of the place value of large and small numbers. In this lesson we will learn what is an exponent and a power of 10 by solving example problems.

I think powers of ten are useful in scientific and engineering notation and calculations.
Why the digits in standard notation are grouped in 3 ?
I think they are easy to convert to some other notations like million, billion and trillion.
