India travel ban was not 'one the government planned for': Hume

The temporary travel ban for India was not planned but was an “important one” as it allowed the government to raise the capacity of the Howard Springs quarantine facility in the Northern Territory, according to Liberal Senator Jane Hume.

“We have been building extra capacity at Howard Springs, we’ve put in an extra half a billion dollars into Howard Springs and it now has the capacity to take on 2,000 people, the hard part of course is making sure the medical resources in Darwin can cope with a significant outbreak,” she told Sky News.

“Just before that travel ban was put in place around 57 people were COVID positive in Howard Springs and resources were stretched to their limit, on top of that one in eight people on the last two flights from India were COVID positive.”

Ms Hume said the travel ban was necessary to allow Australia time to collate sufficient medical resources before resuming repatriation.

“This has been a temporary pause, it wasn’t one we wanted, it wasn’t one that we planned for but was an important one and now we get a chance to life that ban and start repatriating Australians.”

I've just graduated Computer Science and I hope the Government will do more about moving businesses and services online. Australia has the second or the third best internet in the world, and it is seriously underutilised. Moving online will help the Environment. It will cut on traffic, fuel waste, and will make the roads safer and less stressful. Businesses will become more efficient, by not having to worry about accommodating staff. Things will get done quicker as people will not need to travel to conduct business face to face. We will have more time to enjoy our lives.
