For anyone interested behind him is the Lovell Telescope a part of the Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire, England. When it was built in 1957 at 250 ft across it was the largest steerable radio telescope in the world (it's now the 3rd largest) as well as "observing" deep space radio sources it was also one of the key instruments used to track the Apollo missions to the Moon (as the Earth rotated they needed tracking stations at various longitudes to track and monitor radio from the spacecraft 24 hours a day incidentally another nail in the coffin for lunar landing conspiracy theorists, yes us Brits were American allies but the damn Soviets also tracked it and they were tge cold war enemy and space race opposition and even they concede it was real)

Finally, I get to say Dawkins was wrong. Advances in telescopes and arrays have driven technological advances in other sectors such as communications, optics, and imaging. You'd be amazed at how much "pure" science affects daily life.

To Mr. Dawkins : I’ve read your books, you’ve made me understand evolution in all its glory. I promise you if you start having a bad trip on DMT or Psilocybin, they have safe sedatives to instantly have you come down. You don’t have to announce it to the world if you do or have blasted off. But it doesn’t change the real you while tripping. It’s all together a whole new thing. You only orbit this star so many times. Tryptamines are safe and humans have been using them since the dawn of our species.
