Skreecher's Reach is the closest Star Wars has come to straight up Cosmic Horror. Living a horrible existence, entranced by voices from a corrupted item, dragging your mates along on a doomed quest, killing what you think is the threat only to be "rewarded" by your cosmic host, everyone pretending it's a good ending when everyone can feel the truth and we as the watchers know the true horrors ahead. Absoloutley great stuff

The Irish accent is probably because this is from Cartoon Saloon, an Irish animation studio. They made a great animated movie called Secret of Kells. The message of this short to me. It seems to say living in a situation where a person feels hopeless can open them to any path of escape - good or bad.
Thing I love about these VISIONS episodes is how they allow more cultures to express themselves the tools of Star Wars. Reaching audiences that may be hesitant to give foreign films a try. “The Spy Dancer” episode is from a French studio and appears to be inspired by a real world figure from French WWII history.

Fun fact: studio Cartoon Saloon is incapable of not hitting you in the feels. Their movies are incredible. I started to learn gaelic because of them.

This is by far my favorite of the collection thanks to the profound twists that it lays down in a really inventive and very dark story. I don't believe this one has a simple moral, "A good child should do this", so much as layered commentary. We watch a girl trying to escape childhood exploitation in a workhouse (a very historical Irish set up) who is then exploited by one taking advantage of her desperation. The lesson isn't in what she did wrong, the point is in the cruelties of a society that sets us up to be used for the purposes of others, and our conditioning to accept it. ("There are worse lives" is, as you noted, something of an Irish acceptance of a bad lot in life and is heartbreaking in its own right.)

There's a lot to unpack when it comes to the conversion of the Irish to Christianity, and Saloon Cartoon has dealt with aspects of it in their films which are very much worth checking out. I do like what's included here, as well as the pagan aspects of the Banshee and the Fey-like nature of the Sith Mother, a magical, alien presence of questionable morals there to whisk a child away into a whole new realm, never to be heard from again by her friends and family. (It's hard to see the Jedi do the same, after seeing this...)

Kids are pretty good judges of character. They all probably knew something was fishy and could tell there was darkness afoot, and that's why they didn't want her to go. The oldest kid probably knew it in his gut too but has learned to ignore that feeling and because Daal repeated what he said. The younger ones could not express what made them uneasy but instinctively trust their gut feeling -- all this on top of what Achara mentioned about someone you care about leaving.

the second season of visions is even better than the first, it shows that after seeing the good reception of the first season, Lucasfilm decided to give them even more creative freedom, eager to see a third season, hopefully they add more anime studios

Jaby, I think I'm with you with your vibe. While the older male child confirmed that he encouraged her to go, I don't think he felt good about it, and more than just missing his friend. Remember he questioned what happened in the cave, and seemed to do so in a manner which suggested he realized something was wrong. And I think his facial expressions suggested he almost regrets advising her to take ANY chance to leave.

My favourite season 2 episode for sure. Amazingly twisted depiction of a Sith recruiting their apprentice.

Interesting about this is also how the sith mother, Anjelica Huston, allowed her to choose to go with her or stay. This is a very interesting dynamic as the Jedi don’t give the children the choice, but they just take them.

Easily my favorite of the season. The art-style and acting was already really good, but how they played out this story just felt so engaging for me. This tragedy has me so invested in the characters, I want more of this from StarWars, especially animated.

Have y'all seen Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea, or Wolfwalkers? Same animation house. I took the the Sith in the cave as a Star Wars version of a Banshee.

The guy at the end is upset because the girl is going with someone evil. If it was a Jedi they’d have a better reception at the end for her leaving. Still sad but not as cold

I've rewatched this one over and over and it keeps making me cry. I think it's the tiny amount of hope amongst the desperation. And that hope, we know, is false. Just so sad. So sad 😢

The name of the studio that made Episode 2 is Cartoon Saloon. It is from Ireland and has made great animations like The Breadweiner and Wolfwalkers.

The art style reminds me of Gendy Tartavsky who actually animated the 2003 Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

@CinePals (Jaby),

17:41 You watched The Force Awakens, right? Kylo Ren did the same thing with his grandfather's helmet.

I thought the witch in the cave was the master of the Sith who came for Daal. She didn't want the lightsaber when Daal presented to her; she told Daal that it was hers now.

Are all Sith bad? We saw Anakin find his way back to the light. Asajj Ventress seemed to do the same too in Clone Wars. The apprentice we saw in the first episode left the darkness she came from and hid herself in the light, and through her trials she learned that both the light and darkness are apart of her. And isn't that the story of Star Wars? Anakin is the way he is because of Dooku. Anakin completed the journey Dooku put his own Padawan on, the Jedi too. Dooku got lost in his need to change the Jedi Order, but the seeds he planted in his apprentice got passed down to Obi-Wan, Anakin and even Ahsoka too. Qui-Gon might have been a rogue Jedi, but he still adhered to the code while pushing the limits. Obi-Wan and Ahsoka were reluctant rule breakers, but they didn't really need to. Anakin, the guy who grew up in a dog in dog world did the rule breaking for them. It was much easier to break rules because he grew up in a world where rules weren't equal. He experienced first hand how consequences only really affect those who didn't make them, so ignoring the Jedi code here and there wasn't an issue for him because he broke them to help those in need. Anakin, however, got caught up in the lie like Dooku and before he knew it, he too had to double down in order to justify his own mistakes. Anakin's fall brought an end to stubborn Jedi conservativism that failed/refused to see that absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Sadly, Luke didn't get the job done, but Palpatine's clone/granddaughter sure did. Rey was supposed to continue what Palpatine had started, but she rejected his dark teachings and embraced the light. She surrounded by darkness in that cave on Ahch-To, but we see her surround herself in light in the Last Skywalker. Did she extinguish darkness or bring balance? Luke rejected Jedi robes and wore black clothes like the Sith did, but wasn't Sith. Luke knowingly or not, walked in the middle, balancing both sides of the Force. There isn't a light side or a dark side, at least there isn't supposed to be; there is only the Force. We see this in pretty clearly in the next story, Journey to the Dark Head. Balance in the force was always the goal, so how do we not know that the woman who picked up Daal is trying to do that? Either way, we don't know, but we have seen people who've used the Force for themselves, actually use it for good instead.
