Ubuntu 11.10 booting on a Dell D420 laptop using Transcend 32GB 400x CompactFlash card as its drive (So called ghetto SSD :) )

Literature: ;)

CPU: Core Duo 1.2Ghz
Mem: 2GB of some-memory

The cards specs say it should go up to 90 MBps read and 60 MBps write, hdparm and dd shows ~75 meg read and ~45 write with ext4 filesystem, the card connected directly to ATA interface.
Overall it turns out to be kinda great upgrade for those who are stuck with those wild 1.8inch drives.

Thanks for getting back to me do quick. Was the Ubuntu installation customized, or did you have to do anything special to prep the SD card to be bootable?

Oh, and how well does it perform in comparison to the rubbish 1.8" PATA HDD the things came with? Thanks again!

i ebay sourced a generic CF - reformatted with a USB-cf reader - dowloaded standard 64 bit 12.04iso. then copied to cf-64gb while still plugged into the USB reader - shut the lappy down - took out the HDD - shoved in the cf-into a IDE/adapter - turned it back on and FLAWLESS operation - " THANKS TO YOUR VIDEO" thanks for making it - now i also have a zippy fast SSD "THANKS"

How did you get it to boot to the little card? I installed Ubuntu 11.10 and it all went well butt the little 420 doesn't recognize the card as a bootable device. Appreciate your help, cheers.
