This week US President Donald Trump formally recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, breaking with decades of US policy and disregarding warnings from the international community.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas rejected the announcement and said the US could no longer be a mediator in peace talks.

So, what effect does this have on the two-state solution? And what does this mean for the US as a mediator between the two parties?

"They [the Trump administration] aimed a shot at the heart of the two-state solution, which is Jerusalem," says Husam Zomlot, the head of the Palestine Liberation Organisation's General Delegation to the US. "The two-state solution, from the US point of view and mediation, is dead."

In this week's Headliner, the leader of the Palestinian US delegation, Husam Zomlot, discusses the ramifications of Trump's Jerusalem announcement.

The two state solution is dead in the water for a long time because of the settlements. That's why Israel and the US continue with the charade of the peace talks, to give Israel cover to keep on erecting settlements. Only when the international community become involved, will there be any hope of a solution. Mehdi Hasan is a brilliant interviewer, he knows the pertinent questions to ask and he doesn't let the interviewed waffle on.

I just love the interviewer. Confrontational interviews are the best ones. When you invite guests on the show, you must interrupt them constantly and point out all the flaws in their positions. Make them irate and curse you. Then give a broad smile so you make them even more angry. That we they are forced to defend their positions. They are also forced to think outside the box to find answers.

Usually, I watch interviews to listen to the interviewed, not a rude interviewer interrupting every answer. Interviewers who challenge the answers once in a while are nice, but let the man speak, for crying out loud! I watched the whole video cringing in frustration.

Nobody in the journalist school ever told you that you do NOT yell at your guests and let them speak?

The interviewer was brilliant. The tension he created cut to the matter, and rode the razors edge throughout the discussion. I thought it was just a touch on the rehearsed side, but not too much as to diminish emotions.

The young interviewer might ask himself the same questions he is asking the older man.

Zechariah 12:3
And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people:
all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all
the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
