How To Install Closet Shelves | Rubbermaid Fasttrack Closet Kit

I will cover the complete install process for the Rubbermaid Fasttrack Closet Shelf Kit made for 3-6 foot closets but this same install process will also cover the kit for the 4-8 foot closets. The standard drywall anchors with the kit are less than desirable so I recommend using 3/16" toggle bolts and will demonstrate how to install these toggle bolts to help securely hold the verticle braces.

Thank you so much for creating and posting this tutorial. I 100% agree with you and warn all viewers not to use the plastic anchors. I live in Australia and purchased a system from our major hardware chain which looks 95% similar to the Rubbermaid system you used here, using the wall anchors. I installed it 7 - 8 years ago. Unfortunately, I just noticed that the vertical braces and the top rail had come away from the wall, with only the residual friction of the some screws (now at sloping down approx. 45 degrees) in their holes & those which had not snapped their anchor stopping the system from crashing to the floor. In each case the front section of the (useless) plastic anchors which you show at 8.45 had snapped off from the rear section and hence the screws lost all purchase on the wall. Now having cleared all the shelves I am setting about re-installation, so I'll now go with your spring toggles. Your video is a godsend. Thank you, again!

Great Tutorial! This helped me so much to see the tools needed and how to use them. I just installed one of these kits into my closet and referred back to your video when doing so. You are right that the plastic wall anchors in the kit are quite inferior to the metal toggle bolt you showed. I struggled with the plastic anchors and had to use needle nosed pliers to pinch it closed and hold it steady while hammering it into the wall. I screwed the rail into wood studs at five points and the system seems secure for hanging clothes and shoes.

I have a #21640 closet maid. How/can I rearrange the shelving? I would really like 2 shelves all the way around. (I know I would have to buy more pieces. My closest is 5 feet by 27 inches (depth). 91 inches high.

Excellent video. It helped a lot. One question I have is - What is the best way to seal the surrounding area of toggle bolt screw. It’s really tough to get to behind the uprights through the tiny slots. I’m trying to prevent any air leaks from behind the wall into the closet.
