10-year-old Winnie Stirling is a magicless witch still waiting on her powers when she spends her summer break with Nana in the cozy valley of Starlight Hollow. 

Winnie loves staying on her Nana's farm and helping her take care of the animals. She's also glad to be staying with Nana and not at her home in the city. Winnie hasn't talked to her friends since her uncle passed away and doesn't feel like making any new ones. Her best friend is her stuffed animal cat, Chester, who she shares all her hopes and secrets, one being that her magic will help her be OK again. 

One day, while getting a new book from the "Maeve's Favorites" section at the bookstore, Winnie runs into Maeve, and she's her age! There's something special about Maeve and Winnie finds herself wanting to talk again and make a new friend. Through sleepovers, parties, and the fair, there are many fun and serendipitous adventures, but also heartache and healing as the summer comes to an end.

Winnie will learn how much courage she has and what it takes to overcome fears and sadness from the past as she spends a magical summer in Starlight Hollow.
