Michelle Yeoh should win the Oscar for best actress

Fellow Malaysian here! I absolutely share your hope, bias, and desperation for Michelle Yeoh to win. I am however predicting (against my hopes) that Cate Blanchett will win, since BAFTA has traditionally been a more accurate predictor of Lead Actress than SAG (as you said). Plus the general consensus is that Cate’s performance is the best of the year no matter how beloved EEAAO and Michelle Yeoh are.

But I have never been more desperate to be wrong - a Michelle Yeoh victory would send Malaysians to heaven!!!

I find it a bit odd that the BAFTA record was considered for the Best Actress category but not the Best Actor category where the BAFTA winner in the last 8 years has gone on to win the Oscar, including the ultimate upset of Anthony Hopkins over Chadwick Boseman. Similarly Casey Affleck won BAFTA and Denzel Washington won SAG and Casey won the Oscar. And the only reason BAFTA did not match the Oscar win in 2013 is because Dallas Buyers Club was ineligible for BAFTA and so Matthew McConaughey was not nominated. Not to mention the stats on a Best Actor winner whose film was not nominated for Best Picture - the last one was Jeff Bridges in 2009 for Crazy Heart. I think the battle between Austin and Brendan is coming down largely to "narrative." Many think Brendan will win because he has the dramatic comeback narrative but I feel like since the Academy expanded membership to more international voters, the narrative thing doesn't hold as much. Because again, if it did, Glenn Close would have an Oscar right now and so would Chadwick Boseman.

Also, with guild sweeps, EEAAO could have more above the line wins. They have 3 categories locked (Picture, Director, Supp. Actor) and I wonder if its momentum could push the competitors out in Lead and Supp. Actress and Original Screenplay

what michelle yeoh has going for her is the narrative that she's the first Asian actress to be nominated for best actress Oscar, if she wins she will be the first Asian actress to win best actress Oscar. the same narrative when halle berry beats out the front runner sissy spacek, to become the first black actress to win best actress Oscars. added on top of that michelle movie is the front runner at the Oscars more than any other movies, and cate Blanchett has already won 2 Oscars, so voters will be compelled to vote for michelle. so basically all the stars are lining up for michelle to win.

Look i know it looks like Kerry Condon will win the Oscars. BUT IN MY OPINION, THE REAL WINNER OF THIS CATEGORY THIS YEAR IS STEPHANIE HSU. FROM THE MIDDLE OF THE FIRST PART TILL THE END, HER CHARACTER HAD IMMENSE UPS AND DOWNS WHICH I HAVEN'T NORMALLY SEEN IN ANY PAST MOVIES. STEPHANIE PLAYED THE CHARACTER SO WELL. I LIKE IT EVEN MORE THAN KERRY'S (IM SORRY BUT MY OPINION). EEAAO IS SUCH A GREAT MOVIE NOT ONLY BY ITS WRITING OR DIRECTION BUT ALSO BY THE PARTS PLAYED BY ACTORS.
SO IF IT WAS ME ON OSCAR PANEL, STEPHANIE WAS MY WINNER FOR THIS YEAR'S CATEGORY. I STAN HER SO MUCH.

Cate Blanchett should win the Oscar however I want Michelle Yeoh to win no only because of how great of an actor she is but also because she could make history if she wins.

I vote Jaime Lee Curtis because when she came on screen, for some odd reason, I developed DMV PTSD. The stressed look, hairstyle, shirt, overwhelming messy table, and the witch/hag behavior lol.
