Literally heard this on an ATC clip years ago. Tower advised departing aircraft his gear was out longer than usual. Pilot responded it was for brake cooling. Also read that retracted hot gear is actually a fire hazard too.

I have seen this before and the landing gear wasn't retracted for about 2 or 3 minutes after Take-off?!?

I had a maintenance problem in a jet where the temperature sensors in the wheel wells weren't working, so the procedure was to leave the gear down after takeoff for 5-10 minutes to absolutely guarantee the wheels and brakes were cool before retracting them.

Another reason is especially shown on 787s. Sometimes one of the systems fail where the wheel is unable to be stopped from spinning for gear retraction, and in that case they will keep the gears down longer and finally the specific gear will stop spinning (I’m not sure how it eventually stops)

Landing gear is also kept down for longer when things like dirt or snow are on the gear so they can get blown off

I've seen this happen before. So the pilots sometimes allow the landing gear to stay down to cool the brakes even though it is an uncommon practice.
