The King's Singers - Stille Nacht [Silent Night] (arr. Rutter)

To celebrate the coming Christmas season we've recorded a few of our favourite Christmas carols, for you to sing along with us from your homes.

This is one of the world's best-known and best-loved carols, in its original German language version -- 'Stille Nacht'. It was originally written by Franz Gruber and Joseph Mohr. This arrangement was written specially for The King's Singers by John Rutter, for an album which was released in 1989. John has allowed us to share his handwritten score (which we use in performance, to this day) for you to sing along, should you wish!
-
Patrick Dunachie - countertenor
Edward Button - countertenor
Julian Gregory - tenor
Christopher Bruerton - baritone
Nick Ashby - baritone
Jonathan Howard - bass

Das ist sehr Schon! Ich liebe was ich hat jetzt hore. Mein Deutsche ist nicht the best. I know words but forming sentences is challenging. I do know stille nacht by heart auf deutche as a second generation (German) American. I love this song.

My grandfather was born in 1893. His parents died in an epidemic when he was three years old. He was placed into an orphanage in Louisville, KY, run by German Protestant Lutherans. It was a Dickensian childhood (and not in a good way), but he learned German, and each Christmas would sing "Stille nacht" in his beautiful bass-baritone. He would have loved this wonderful version. Thank you King Singers for the music, and for recalling this sweet memory of my Paw-Paw.

At first I thought "oh no, the last thing the world needed is an arrangement of Stille Nacht by John Rutter", but it turned out that's EXACTLY what it needed.

There are all these memes about German sounding harch and brutal.

And then you hear this. Something to prove that ALL languages can sound beautiful.

I am multilingual and speak several languages and/or dialects that other people find ugly, but it is a matter of the ear that listens.

I can't explain it, but this brought tears to my eyes. The blend, the harmonies are just sublime! Thank you!

sinece german is my first language i'm used to mock my british friends with things like "try to say Leuchttrum (lighthouse)" or "try Streichholzschächtelchen (a box for match sticks)". They usually fail around the first ch :D. Long story short, i'm very impressed with the clear and absolute on point pronunciation of this song.

My first time at listening to these King Singers. I remember the ones back in the mid to late 70’s, maybe early 80’s. Wow, and wow again! Absolutely fantastic, the best I’ve heard this beautiful Christmas carol sung in many a year. Thank you so much. Hope you all have a wonderful, safe Christmas. God bless you all.
