Glad I saw this Suzi! I've had my Insta360 X3 for maybe six months now, and though there are lots of great angles you can edit to, and with, in post production, I was a little disappointed with the sharpness. In fact, I preferred my tiny Insta360 Go 2, for that! But then (just now seeing your single lens footage, and never having tried it on mine) I see that in single lens mode, you have nice clean, crisp, sharp video imagery! Looking forward to using it again now! Thank you!

I agree with you that the X3 is an amazing camera, and very versatile. Buts its only an action camera if your not into extreme sports like skiing, surfing, snowboarding and so on, for those folks the Hero 11 is probably the better choice. Great video Suzi, I haven't upgraded from the X2 yet, but that big screen on the X3 is tempting me.

Thanks for the great review! I just got my x3 today, as an upgrade from the original Insta360 ONE, , , and boy, what a difference! Will be going abroad next year for a couple months and this baby will be in the bag. Was wondering about the Rode microphone choice you mention... is it a bit fiddly to set up, or is it just plain worth the extra work? I am a stickler for good audio, so will probably get the Rode..

I used for vlog because I can choose myself as well as the target. The mic adapter is small and cheaper than GoPro. I also make my own cold shoe mouth for Dji wireless mic.

Good summary - and indeed it's great for family occasions. You don't have to spend the time with your eye glued to a viewfinder.

But - there's a glaring error when you talk about the sound. The X3 has four mics not three (front, back, left, right). It has various sound settings including a stereo option, and this gives you sound which is about as good as it gets - up there with the Pocket 2 and the Action 2. Well, actually it could be improved a little if they offered an option to turn off the front and back mics when not required, to give a wider stereo image. But it's not hard in a decent editor like "resolve" to apply a widening effect to the audio.

Sound when speaking to the camera is just fine in stereo mode - of course like any camera, if you hold it a long way away from yourself it won't have the close sound you get with a lav mic. But they also provide another sound setting, which adds emphasis to the sound coming from the direction that you are pointing to when reframing. That's pretty neat, but it's mono in that mode, and the sound is a bit edgy for my taste.

I so wish Me Mode produce video file you can use straight away rather than having to export. It cuts short its purpose.
