The 'pro' model is DRASTICALLY different from the car audio unit. moving mass of the stroker 18 is around 3x that of the original. the top plate of the car audio unit is around 19mm thick - that's 10mm thicker than the original. The pro model has a lower fs, lower xmax and a higher sensitivity (of approximately +4db/1w/1m). The only shared attribute of the two is the front spider - which permitted much better stroke linearity and a tighter than normal vc gap - achieving far greater efficiency. The original is definitely a hifi speaker. the car audio unit is far from a hi-fi speaker and behaves a lot more like a pro audio unit by todays standards. This video is a classic illustration of how those with no understanding of audio seem to pollute the industry.

As a former Cerwin Vega Pro division Factory Rep, the Stroker was NEVER used for the Movie Earthquake! The Movie Earthquake used massive Cerwin Vega 18 inch Folded Horns with the woofer itself mounted in sealed cabinets, all powered by BGW 750 Amps designed by Brian Gary Wachner. There was a special Processor that sat up in the Projection Booth that delivered the Earthquake effect. :-)

I used to know John Fairchild very well. The original "Stroker" was the 189ES. AKA the "Elephant Stroker" which is what the ES part stood for. The cones? were not made by Cerwin Vega. They were manufactured by Fane Acoustics in the UK. Hence whenever I blew mine up John would send me a new coil and spiders, and I would get the cone from Fane.

Hi I know you are not talking about the cvp2153 but do you know if it had an issue from factory, a recall or something? Thank you very much if you can answer for me. I have looked everywhere for info regarding that issue and could not find anything. I agree, a full range speaker with an 18” woofer😱.
No one has made a full range speaker with an 18” in it. Sorry if I don’t understand what you said.

Cerwin vega op 18-2's are the closest they came to it after the Sr2's.. "op" short for Organ pipes. From what I know, they were custom ordered as I viable alternative for those pipes. I own a set and I know of one other owner who is the one that turned me on to the pair I purchased. If you're reading this Heath thanks again man

I’m sure you probably have never heard of a loud sub woofer is you’re saying this sub isn’t up to today standard . I had one 15 stroker in a huge box, my friend had 2 12 inch alpine type x and he couldn’t believe want I had in my suv . How the hell are you comparing a teacher to a student ? I’m sure you guys don’t know the requirements of a loud sub woofer, because if you do you’ll understand the stroker, and realized that the dual spider was a technology that was so clever .

I have a Stroker 12d and the manual suggests an enclosure of 2.7 cubic feet. By the mid 1990's, big monkey-coffin speakers with large woofers were losing market share to narrow-cabinet speakers and sub/satellite h.t. systems. I like your idea personally, however it's a niche market product. My guess is this may be thier reasoning?

I owned every stroker size and those subs are the shit and it was very efficient

The stroker subs were so expensive in the 90s for car audio.... Just imagine what one home audio enclosure with a stroker, mid, and tweeters would be? It would easily be $1k per enclosure.... Then you would have to power It may have been a mistake yes, but how many people would spend thousands of dollars for home audio? If I was guessing it could be about $5k.

I could not agree more man, back in the late 90's early 2000's me and my brother took a pair of dual 15in towers and replaced the drivers with 4 old stroker pro 4ohm wired series/parallel up to 8ohm and wowww they were way better than the red drivers ever could have been and it was common to find a pair needing refoamed or with seized coils so we didn't have much money into them other than the 4 stroker pro 15's we already had so naturally when someone offered us two grand for them we took it like fools.... 🤦‍♂️

They did have a stroker line. I was mad when they made it. Because in my eye the Stroker subs were sacred beasts. By today's standard the stroker series should be beefy high output mids abs supertweeters. They do have stroker mids out today. They are beautiful. But I do not know how they sound or if they can produce midbass.

That would have been great to have that in the home, especially at that time. Would have been in Heaven!

Actually they did do a stroker home hifi model. A variation of the 15T, or was it an 18 for that version. Read about it at the time. Perhaps it never came out?

The new and older stroker both looks similar, but are both very different, both are good in their own way, as one commenter said, the original was more like a hifi speaker, the newer one is almost like a woofer and or pa driver, its fs is like 45hz or something like that, you said in your title it was maybe the biggest mistake that vega ever made, you're very wrong there sir...

When the move "earth quack" came out they reportingly used the strokers to mimicked the sound. they had to check the move theaters structure to make sure the building could handle it.

Just for info there was also a 18" stroker that had a red surround the first model
