How to Recalibrate Your Tesla Battery To Regain Range

It is important to know your Tesla's charging protocol because due to improper charging your battery will have a calibration issue and you will quickly lose range even if it's a new Tesla model.

To avoid a Tesla battery calibration issue, learn to reset your EV's Battery Management System

Tesla owner and expert Ian Pavelko has compiled the following steps for a Batter Management System reset.

1. If you have been staying at home, doing mostly short-range trips, and keeping SoC in the middle zone to preserve your battery, it’s a good idea to do a BMS (Battery Management System) reset once in a while to ensure it’s accurate when you are on a long trip.

2. Just drive your Tesla until you’re down into the single-digit percentage range of your battery, let it sit for an hour while pinging periodically with the app or the door handle to keep it awake, charge it up to 100% and do the same thing, then be sure to drive it immediately.

3. If your Tesla has collected much dust as mine has recently and it’s been a long time (or never) since you’ve done this, when using up that last bit of battery on the discharge part, stay close to a charging outlet and pay close attention to how the power output decreases as you approach single-digit SOC. If it starts to get super lethargic, as it doesn’t want to climb past 50 mph (80 km/h), head to home or a nearby charger immediately at a very sedate pace, then continue the regime.

4. Some Tesla owners have found that they need to do it twice in a row, but mine has always gone back to being spot-on after just one cycle.

In addition, Tesla Youtuber Sean Mitchell also suggested three key tips to keep in mind in order to maintain optimum health for your Tesla battery.

1. Don’t regularly charge your Tesla to 100%

2. Don’t let the state of charge drop to lower than 10% on a regular basis
Protect the battery pack from high temperatures. This includes regularly using the Supercharger stations. Fast charging warms the batteries faster too.

"As noted here, keeping the daily state-of-charge of your Tesla to around 90% really helps to avoid an imbalance of battery calibration. Just remember to set the max charging limit to 90%. To that end, be sure to check out the 'how-to' video below for a quick tutorial," writes Iqditar Ali in Evannex.

Please, also feel free to share your tips on how to regain the Tesla battery range, how to reset it, and how to extend your electric vehicle's range.

New owner of a MY LR 2020. Maxed range at 100% 296 miles to do a 435 miles road trip. Set Navigon to a 176 miles SC Station it estimated arrival state of charge at 17% but gradually reached 32% with also preparing the battery for optimal charge when it was near. Road trip was on Basic Auto Pilot 90%. I charge at the SC Station to 95% at 45 minutes. So far a successful vacation. Back at home and has set it to charge at 80% (234 miles) I do the battery calibration to see if I'll reach the 326 estimate range on a 3 yrs old Tesla.

2016 model s. Rarely supercharged and mostly at home. Original maximum s75 range was 246 after software update (unlock). Still getting around 228-230 Max. Very low degradation of you ask me.

started with 515km range. Now, 2, 5years later with 80000km its only 468km... I will recalibrate

Does this work for the new LFP batteries?

Literally every Tesla expert on Reddit says that draining the battery down to single digits to "recalibrate" the range estimate is a TERRIBLE idea! Its going to put serious wear & tear on the battery.

I need someone to clarify the part that says "do the same thing." Does that mean, deplete to <10mi, charge back to 100%, and then drive it all the way below 10% and charge back to 100% again?! As in, a calibration is only complete after doing the whole process two times??

That calibration method no longer works. Nothing works. It's a scam. Owner speaking here. Tesla itself should offer more help in restoring lost range like a service at its service centers. We should not have to rely on YouTube videos to figure this out. I'm so glad Tesla is getting more and more competition from other companies entering the EV space.

Your real range does not increase only the range number shown is recalculated to be more accurate. Kim Java’s actually range didn’t increase only the display of the range did. The actual range remains the same.
