Yep. As a mental health therapist I can confirm this problem. Psychiatrists have mostly become pill pushers, and it's left up to us counselors to actually address the client problems.

Thank you for addressing these issues. Another one that comes to mind is that psychiatrists can, and do, shame and blame patients when the patients do poorly on the drugs prescribed by the psychiatrist.

I was called treatment resistant after my depression got worse on SSRIs and Klonopin (this was 20+ years ago, before there were any warnings about these drugs), then sent for ECT, then told "you have borderline personality disorder. That's why the ECT didn't work.". (I also had severe memory loss from the ECT, which the psychiatrist had said was extremely rare).

The psychiatrist didn't tell me what borderline personality disorder was, so when i got home from the appointment I looked it up online. I was devastated.

For the next 10 years i was poly drugged, including with antipsychotics, and in and out of treatment programs including DBT. I felt i was an outcast and a failure and received that message consistently from family, friends and professionals. No one could understand why I couldn't just "get better" (in fact I kept getting worse. I didn't know it but I had undiagnosed akathisia).

I went from working full time while pursuing a master's degree to fully disabled.
I'm now finally off the psych drugs and have given up on treatment but still carry emotional scars from being diagnosed with the most stigmatized mental illness when i was just trying to get by. The childhood trauma that was at the root of my issues was never addressed.

At 57, I'm extremely isolated and in poor health but also afraid of many things including being judged by people.

".... depression usually stemming from life hardship and stresses, not from genetic predispositions" THANK YOU! the amount of people who take psychiatric drugs is mindboggling
Medicine is important, people can live longer lives because of drugs like penicillin, but psychiatric drugs are just being prescribed like smarties

The biggest mistake I made in my life was trusting a psychiatrist. Now I'm partially disabled from the drugs. The side effects were not minimized but simple ignored (they told me it was not possible). The severe withdrawal I went trough was not minimized but simply ignored (they said withdrawal is like having the flu for 2 weeks then it's over)... This withdrawal left me disabled with dysautonomia, cognitive impairment, sleep issues, memory issues, systemic inflammations, tons of allergies, hormonal imbalances... and of course I HAD NO HELP FROM DOCTORS. The psychiatrist labelled me an hypocondriac. The only doctor that believed me was my cardiologist. Psychiatry is no science this is even not medecine, it's a legal drugs market.

It s all about prescribing benzos, then no worries, you are in, withdrawal is terrible it took me three years to be " normal" again after being prescribed clonazepam for fifteen years, sleepless nights, being in a nightmare for months and months, then changing doctors worldwide, money for detox, cant work normally still problems with socialising, wish everyone recovery STAY STRONG

A friend was having issues with depression and anxiety and was so grateful to finally see a psychiatrist after months of waiting so she could talk about her issues. When she started sharing her story the psychiatrist told her he only wrote scripts and to see a therapist if she wanted to discuss issues.

I'm 49 years old. I have been prescribed countless psychiatric medications for nearly 30 years. None have benefited me long term while many of the undisclosed or minimized side effects have impaired or continue to impair the quality of my life even though I discontinued all of these medications. Metabolic syndrome. Movement disorders. Rapid weight fluctuations. The list goes on and on.

Remarkably, for the first time in my adult life I am below the threshold for clinical depression for almost a year now. This is because I took it upon myself and targeted an underlying chronic inflammatory response that has likely beenresponsible for all of my alleged psychiatric issues.

My graduate degree is in clinical psychology and neuroscience. I am a published co-author in cognitive neuroscience with a research focus in sensory processing in persons with chronic and severe mental health conditions.

I'd like to share my story with you.

I’m a psychiatric nurse and as I’ve become aware of exactly these kinds of problems (and worse) I’m not happy to be a part of this system … I raise questions constantly and many of my fellow nurses agree … but for the most part, they (nurses, doctors, NPs, administrators) ignore us (or worse)

Besides “not resolving root problems “ with their drugs, they are actually exacerbating the patient’s problems WITH THEIR DRUGS and complete lack of care or concern.

I'm suspicious of *ALL* doctors now. It's all about money, and precious few of them care about anything else.
I'm starting to feel the same way about some veterinarians now too because I can see the exact same problems creeping into that field.
It's sad. You just can't afford to trust anyone anymore. 🥺

All I know is that risks for medication injury are bigger and badder than they think.

1. They don't act as if they truly care about the patient 2. They overemphasize prescribing of medications rather than working on root causes of problems 3. Doctors unaware of medication implications and complications.
Another would be government entities getting between providers and patients. This is a problem with many religious providers now who aren't allowed to incorporate faith into much of their methodologies.

That’s the whole mainstream medicine when it comes to chronic conditions!

Well said Dr Josef, however, there must be a solution. Psychiatry is a profit driven industry so why should systemic change occur without incentives? Whia there is little scientific literature outlining the dangers of psycho active medication, the over abundance of case studies describing the harmful effects can not be ignored. How can anyone put a price tag on someone struggling?

I have friends who are on medication for mental health reasons, and they tell me often times that their therapist doesn't show much interest in them, they just want to push pills
