Is It Time For BIKE CULTURE In MANILA?!

In my opinion, this is a really cool idea that's starting to get talked about more and more here in Metro Manila. Could you imagine a city where even 5% of the normal commuters biked instead of drove or took public transportation?

I try to outline a few things that people here in Metro Manila need to focus on if they truly want to make this change in their city.

Marami akong Mga kaibigan na nagbibisakletya! This is a great idea! I feel this same way!

I have done so much walking all over Maynila. And it is only 30 minutes to an hour. I have been considering getting a bike too.

I am an old guy, retired, from the Seattle Washington State area. I now live in Malabon Metro Manila. I am an experienced cyclist. I ride my bike in Metro Manila and in the provinces. Riding a bike is challenging in Mania, due to the traffic, and it is dangerous. It is also the most fun you can have on a bike. I am interested in supporting efforts to make cycling better/easier in Mania. I am also interested in finding groups/clubs of older riders interested in long distance and overnight rides. Sidewalks and pavement in Manila and Philippines need improvement to make it easy for pedestrians and cyclists to move around easily .
Look at Singapore and see how easy it is to travel around almost anywhere in Singapore,
Using just a bicycle on pavement+ cycling path and foot path .

I totally agree on this. I just started biking to work this year. Just bring an extra shirt.

Manila and cities need to be cleaner in general. The problem is Jeepneys and tricycles have become sort of a symbol in the country but these things are responsible with the issues of traffic and pollution. I hope the government can balance Jeepney and tricycle use and also force discipline and try to promote more pedestrian travel like bicycle use and walking streets.

If bicycle lanes are built in Manila,
a journey that will take 3 hours in congested manila by car,
will take only 15 minutes by bicycle,
saving huge amount of time,
since a bicycle wont get stuck in the traffic jam .

My husband preferred to use his bike since childhood. He was surprised and relieved many people using the bike now for transportation.

The problem is, Philippines is a tropical country. The temperature is very hot. In European countries, it's always cold they are located in north. So it's so nice to do bicycling. The weather is soooo chill.

Filipinos have always been status conscious, that's why most people go into debt to buy cars they can ill afford, just so their neighbors will perceive them as "well off".

Agree ☺ Yes, you are right!
One more thing is that the Government should pass the bill or law to maintain the cleanliness inside Metro Manila and provide a Bike Lanes so that it's easier to drive bikes, and they should approved the BRT or Bus Rapid Transit so that the roads will decongest traffic

Thanks for bringing this up. Neo-urbanism is rising throughout the world because of the pandemic, and in LA where I was living, I was biking everywhere. I'm doing the same in Manila, where I live now.

The government should start planning on building bike lanes, keeping the roads and the bikers safe. 🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️🚴‍♂️

This has to be taken with utmost precautions. This is an unforgiving tropical country with alternating storms. Either you get pummelled with rain and wind while navigating a not bike-friendly traffic or hit with heatstroke. 2 bikers have died due to this since ECQ was lifted. We have to prepare the mega city for bike culture first.
