"What's The Matter Here?" was the third single released from 10,000 Maniacs' 1987 album In My Tribe, following Peace Train and Like the Weather.[1] A live version with lead vocalist Mary Ramsey was also included on their 2016 album Playing Favorites.

The song continued the band's slow integration into the mainstream of American commercial radio; it was a number 9 hit on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1988 and reached the Billboard Hot 100 as well (the second single by the band to reach the latter chart, after "Like the Weather"). The song, as the rest of the album, was produced by Peter Asher (half of the duo Peter & Gordon, and producer of Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor). The song was written by Natalie Merchant and Robert Buck.

In the song, singer Natalie Merchant narrates the role of a woman who notices that her neighbors are abusing their young son, and struggles to balance her desire to speak up for the child with her feeling that she must not interfere in the family's affairs: "I'm tired of the excuses everybody uses/He's your kid, do as you see fit/But get this through that I don't approve of what you do to your own flesh and blood ... I want to say, "What's the matter here?"/But I don't dare say..."

I've seen this band perform more than any other. This song, this album, their discography are all good, soulful and full of message. Natalie went solo eventually and had a strong career on her own. The band continued after she left, but didn't have the same success. I'm glad a patron has added them. I hadn't heard the Stevie Knicksness of her voice before, but I totally hear it now. Great pick!

Natalie Merchant is wonderful and great storyteller. What a career! Started out in 10, 000 maniacs with hits. She went solo in mid-90’s Tiger Lily. wow! awesome singer and songwriter.

Natalie Merchant is so classic. I always respect when singers and bands touch upon a sensitive issue like child abuse. It’s true it’s too serious to put on a bop rotation but maybe on a different playlist. I haven’t heard this one before and I really like it.

Great song. Love the lyrics and Natalie’s voice. This was the first track I liked from them.

So glad to see someone finally doing a 10, 000 maniacs reaction! They are sorely lacking on YouTube. If you want a more lighter uplifting song from 10, 000 Maniacs/Natalie Merchant, please do the song ‘like the weather’ (The music video)

The message of this song is: Many people should NOT have children!

Natalie (and her band before the solo) is quite political, in that many of her/their songs have a message like this one. It's ONE of the reasons I love her/them!

Thanx

Their biggest hit is probably THESE ARE DAYS - check it out!

In the end, surely Natalie too was merely an observer of the boy's situation. No actual help.

“In My Tribe” was among the first CDs I owned. Still listen to it today. Songs about child abuse, illiteracy, and anti-gun sentiments…Guess it’s the Social Worker in me! 🤷🏻‍♂️

The singer is Natalie Merchant, she also has some solo work. This is a good song, but it's not something I would put into heavy rotation. As you said the subject matter is way to serious. There are some parents in this world who need to listen to it though.

This song isn't my favorite by 10, 000 maniacs but I truly love her singing. I'm looking forward to more reactions of 1000 M's and also Natalie Merchants solo career. I love that you got some Stevie Nicks vibes from her. She is goddess status for me. I can't wait for you to really get into her song catalog. I will definitely contribute Patreons picks ❤️❤️❤️

Great band and I love her solo album Tigerlily too.

It's too bad that this version is an edit of the album track. It's not a lot longer version of the video but this cuts out some lines that are even more impactful ...but you are right, you can't exactly dance around to this song when the subject matter literally is slapping you in the face with such a heavy and important topic.

She was an amazing vocalist and songwriter albeit a touch too serious and intense 😁
