What is HDR (High Dynamic Range)? and why is it so Important for your next television or monitor?

HDR is a cutting edge display technique for displaying far superior scenes in film and video. It dramatically improves the colour and contrast of images resulting in a much more immersive visual experience closer to what we see in real life.

HDR will become available for all UHD blurays, online streaming services like Netflix and Amazon, television broadcasters like the BBC, video hosting sites like Youtube, as well as console and PC gaming throughout 2017 and beyond.

HDR is a significant improvement and will pave the way for how we consume all our visual content for the forseeable future.

This video will explain everything you need to know about HDR at this time (Jan 2017) and why your next primary TV / monitor purchase should have it.

Thanks great video, expertly put together, and very helpful and informative! Although i do have to say i think its still too early to splash out on HDR TV gear, the HDR content seems to be still very thin on the ground, to warrant the expense anyway. No doubt it will be worth it at some point... Shame there's still no HDR for PC gamers atm, doesnt make sense as PC gamers are more likely to game at 4k than console gamers! Thanks dude keep up the good work :)

Great vid, good data, though one big aspect seems to have been missed, and is needed for gaming, Input lag specs need to be posted by manufactures. And an Input Lag "gaming" standard min spec should be set.

I calculated the contrast ratios for LED and OLED. 20, 000:1 for LED HDR10 spec vs ~1, 000, 000:1 for OLED HDR10 spec. So OLED is 50 times better than LED.

I know what my choice will be :)

I got the Vizio P502ui-B1E (basically P-Series) it's a Ultra 4K TV I loved it when I got it yeah it was known Samsung or Sony but it held its own I love watching Blu-ray movies on it it has a cinema like picture with a full array backlight the blacks are supper there wasn't any 4K content at the time I got it so I rely on Netflix 4K contact and I thought it was great but I couldn't wait for Blu-ray 4K to come out keep in mind I got this TV in 2014 an ultra Blu-ray player came out in 2016 I noticed this HDR new technology came out I seen it in stores and it was okay I still thought when I got my Blu-ray player it was also a good picture but I kept and adjusting the picture when playing 4k Blu-ray the colors look like PlayStation 1 graphics I was trying to blend them in as like the sky it did not work I even showed off to my friends the 4K Blu-ray player on my 4K TV and I thought I was the big shot until my friend took me to his house and show me his Samsung HDR 4K TV that's when I knew what HDR means I was blown away what I was saying that I recognize 4K with HDR expecially when he put the movie Life of a secret pets the colors popped the whole screen came to life that I never seen in my life my mouth dropped coming home to my 4K TV it was no adjusting that i can do I even call Vizio if there was going to be a update to make this TV HDR they said no I have to upgrade money is very tight these days so I'm feeling the hurt wishing I had a HDR television I have my eyes on two TVs this year and I'm hoping to get it thank you again for this video it was very helpful and wish me luck to getting HDR television.

There was Betamax vs VHS, Bluray vs HD DVD, and now HDR10 vs Dolby Vision HDR.

Just discovered your channel I'm leaning towards a hdr monitor considering the vast input lag on hdr 10 TVs

If Windows 10 uses RGB and you get a HDR monitor, will you have the ability to turn HDR off? Or is the image just going to use RGB on the screen even though it has HDR? Because in the meantime there certainly isn't many games using HDR yet. I'm only aware of Mass Effect Andromeda using HDR currently.

So if you have a midrange 4K UHD TV and the HDR is less than impressive, is it because the peak brightness isn't high enough or because it isn't properly calibrated? I have a Sony KDX55720E and I like it a lot except for the HDR performance. I can get a better picture playing with the settings on standard, custom and cinema than with HDR...

Pretty sad that LG oled crushes blacks and clips highlights, so there is alot of information getting lost with HDR on this display
