Very Low Frequency (VLF) technology is one of the fundamental technologies used for cable testing and diagnosis in the field. Diagnostic tests such as Tan Delta rely on the VLF waveform to take the measurements required for assessing the cable's insulation condition. VLF withstand testing is a powerful tool on its own, with a proven record of improving system reliability and reducing customer outages.

The VLF band is 3kHz to 30kHz; the ELF band is 3Hz to 3kHz;; so perhaps this method should be called the SLF method or "super low frequency" test? Incidentally, the Megger insulation tester was used by geophysicists in the 1950s to locate gravel and deposits before specific instruments were manufactured for those applications.
