Have you ever had this problem? You go to open a text file on your Mac and you get a message that says “You can’t open this document, you don’t have permission.” You check the settings and everything looks fine. But the damn file won’t open.

I was frustrated by this same problem and finally found the perfect fix - a solution that works.

Give this a try and let me know if it works for you.

Thank you for this! FYI: I'd never had this problem until I installed MS Word to work on a client's file and started having Permissions issues with the Word files, and then it spread to my TextEdit files! Just in case you're using Word on your Mac, it may be the culprit to creating this problem in TextEdit.

Before you do anything try to RESTART your computer! Did the trick for me!

I had a very similar issue popup when it came to saving my document. This did the trick. Thank you!

You only have to Force Quit and restart TextEdit to "solve" this but it's not a permanent solution, it comes back after a couple of days,

Thank you very much. I had it the other way round with closing / saving the file and this seemed to help.

Worked for me too. I found that I could open the file with other tools as Xcode, so the problem was not a file permission issue, just a TextEdit problem. Anyway this solved it! Thanks. (MBP 2015, OSX 10.12)
