Vice President Kamala Harris had been widely expected to select Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro as her running mate for the upcoming election due to the importance of the Commonwealth's 19 electoral votes.

Instead, Harris chose a dark horse candidate in Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, leaving some political experts surprised.

"I have to admit, I was a little surprised," said Shippensburg University Political Science Professor Dr. Alison Dagnes. "I really thought that it was going to be Governor Shapiro. [He] is a moderate, he has terrific experience and he has a lot of energy. He is incredibly articulate and I just thought that he would bring a great amount of Pennsylvania to the ticket. Pennsylvania is a really important state."

Dagnes believes selecting Shapiro would have given Harris a leg up over GOP nominee and former president Donald Trump in the Commonwealth.
