Ford has officially launched its new Ford GT, somewhat secretly in Detroit a few weeks ago. Spinelli talks with Mike and Zac from Classic Car Club Manhattan (past owners of three different Ford GT's) about whether the new one will live up to the legend of the old.

To me, the GT40 & GT70 (older Ford GTs) were THE American Supercars. An aerodynamic car with the exotic look & a giant truck engine to give it the power. To this day, nothing really compares to the Ford GT in terms of American power. The car just screamed power & speed while still offering the best handling for its time & still amazing handling today. This car beat Ferraris, Lambos & Porsches around the track while still being reliable & just a ridiculous car in general. Then if you fast forward to today, you see twin turbo Ford GTs pushing 2000hp while still being semi-reliable & hitting 280mph.

The 2005 Red Ford GT with white stripes is my dream car that will always be a dream, but the New Ford GT while it's a v6 Supercar Nissan's GTR & Porshe's 911s have showed it does better with 6 cylinders than most cars can do with 8-12.
The 3.5L Ecoboost in the Taurus SHO has been pushed over 600hp on stock internals in a family luxury sedan. Now with the engine upgraded from the factory at 600hp with a chassis that is developed for speed & downforce we're in for a show.

Ford knows they have huge shoes to fill, so it's going to be awesome to really see what this car can do once it's in production. Stock, yeah this thing is going to be a beast but when tuned this car will be a platform to compete with the AMS GTR.

How do you talk about V6 supercars and never mention the NSX? It was also made to beat Ferrari.

The GTR is a V6 and that is a crazy super car

Just can't understand why Ford decided to put the 3.5 V6 in the new GT and give the new GT350 an 8000+ rpm redline flat plane crank V8.

This new GT is just absolutely begging for a up rated (possibly supercharged) version of that new V8 that they have planned.

Its amazing to me that a 500+ HP turbo motor is seen as too mainstream for a supercar. For all the efforts American companies have been putting into public acceptance of turbos in regular cars, I'd have to say this proves that their mission is accomplished. In this current HP war, I don't think it matters what setup is making the number.

I think Mike P. hit the nail right on the head when he said it will be a super car in the sense that it pushes Ford's engineering team to break new grounds, and go racing again. Can't deny thats what it has in common with the orginal GT-40.

I think, to harken back to Mike Spinelli's inquiry, when you consider the question "can a 6 cylinder be a supercar", you also have to adjust the supercar definition for today's industry. The new GT can be considered a supercar, because "supercar" isn't the highest rung like it used to be, which is reserved for "hypercars" like the P1/TheFerrari/Grandaddi Veyron/any Koenigsegg etc. Even when considering small scale production, the Lykan HyperSport has a Porsche flat-six with upwards of 700hp. And an alleged 0-60 in 2.8s. Supercar? I think that sells it a bit short. The 959 had a flat six, and it was definitely a "hypercar" in its time. So yeah, context and timeframe. Great video, as always, thank you!

I like that the new GT is getting a lot of new technology because it says "look what we can do, we can make a car as good as Ferrari can" The 05 GT was great, it was a recreation of the original GT but a classic should only be recreated once. That's why the new GT needs new technology so it can compete with Ferrari like the original GT did.

Okay, MKI was the original 289 car. MKII was the 427 car Shelby produced after he took over the program. MKIII was the street car. MKIV was the American designed and built car.

Now, 1075 is a MKI (Mark I), because it is a small-block car. Later on, after the MKII came out, 1075 received the flared quarters from the MKII. So basically, all that happened was it received a wide-body conversion so they could run 13-inch wide rear tires. Then, for the '68 season, it received a 425h.p. 302 V8.

I have nothing against a V6 powered supercar, just as I'm sure many others don't either. The problem is that it's a V6, in a Ford GT. It just doesn't belong in there, period.

Use that v6 engine in a new Taurus SHO, and instead work on the previous GT V8 motor, which was quite possibly Ford's best production engine, and put it in the new GT, with a proper manual gearbox, and you've got yourself another huge market success.

I just saw the GT at the Cleveland auto show and it is the most epic design I have ever seen. I am totally in love with it. The turbo v6 doesn't bother me a bit. Ford needs competitive delineation and what better engine to use than one that could prove what they are selling on the street at the highest levels of racing? It's a new/old direction from Ford and I think it is brilliant. Kudos to Ford. I can't wait to see the production car, and I can't wait to see them take it racing. I may actually take a vacation to go see it at Sebring if/when they do.
