34067 Tangmere Powers through Penrith, 23rd April, 2022

Today's railtour was the "Northern Belle", ex Telford bound for Carlisle, returning via the S&C.

Here we see the machine powering through Penrith having set the world ablaze (according to the platform announcement a few minutes later) in the Lune Gorge around Tebay.

Station staff were announcing an "indefinite delay" to the following northbound service whilst the Fire Brigade were able to deal with the problem.

A quick look at the afternoon's schedules revealed that the mayhem lasted for quite some time . . .

My recollection is that these "Spam Cans" had a reputation for ejecting sparks, and I guess the crew may have been building up a nice fire and a boilerful of steam ready for the ascent of Shap. Plus there was a fairly stiff wind from the North West, which may have added to the problem.

The weather had been unusually dry for several days beforehand, which presumably didn't help.

I saw this loco at Oxenholme Lake District and it was a truly stunning sight to see. Glad to see that you also caught it further up the WCML :>

Very nice Martin. I didn't know about the fire, but it didn't look like Tangmere was working very hard as it passed through Penrith there. I think 57316 was pushing hard.
