I use ropes pretty often at my job, they are expensive so they get reused until they are worn out and a visual inspection doesn't always tell you if the rope is safe to use

I had a hammock to sleep in. For 3 years I used the same set up with carabineers in the part that the rope normally sits in. When I took off the hammock to change it, the carabineers sawed thought what I'd guess is 75% of the parachute cloth.

Makes perfect sense to me..doesn’t need to be a knife edge, a straight metal edge like that rubbing against climbing rope will obviously damage it over time.

Once as a young man I abseiled from the side of a bridge in the middle of the night using a headtorch. I had a bit of fun on the way down swinging on the rope. When I went back to retrieve my rope it had been rubbing on the concrete and was half way through.
