Chinese firms ‘helping’ Pakistan for its ballistic missile project? US imposes sanctions, Pak reacts

Questions are being raised if Chinese firms are helping Pakistan for its ballistic missile program. On April 19, the US imposed sanctions on 1 Belarusian and 3 Chinese firms for allegedly assisting Pak’s long range missile endeavours. US also specified that the sanctions were imposed “not to punish” but to bring “positive change in behaviour”.“The Department of State is designating four entities pursuant to Section 1(a)(ii) of Executive Order 13382, which targets proliferators of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery. These entities have supplied missile‐applicable items to Pakistan’s ballistic missile program, including its long-range missile program. The ultimate goal of sanctions is not to punish, but to bring about a positive change in behavior,” US Department of State stated.Pakistan also reacted to the sanctions imposed and alleged United States of discrimination. Country’s Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch stated that Pak “rejects political use of export controls”.As a result of the sanctions, the properties of the designated persons/firms in the US or in possession or control of US persons are blocked.
