As someone planning to "prank" my neighbor, this was an extremely useful and informative tutorial!

I can't imagine something much more terrifying in a pure infantry engagement than a well-supplied fortified defensive machine gun emplacement with an experienced crew.

Hello,
as a former Germany Fallschirmjäger of the Bundeswehr, trained in the 90tys, some thinks we learnd about the MG3.
1. 2 man teams are the minimal. Uou need the MG1(gunner), he carry the pistol, a drum with 150rounds and 300 in a bag for supressing fire. Also the MG3 Multitool, the 2nd breech.
The MG3 ist a special MG, cause the fire rate ist so high and it turns with the tripod(Erdziellafette) from a light MG to a heavy MG.
2. OK, so you never carry a Not loaded MG in a hostile enviroment.
3. the German MG ammo boxes, have a special desing. If you pop it off in the right direktion, you use the inner top Cover for youre ammo belt. IT stays clean.
3. If you wanna use the German tri pod, u could build or unfold IT in any position. But u don't do IT right near by the MG.
4. You don't reassamble the MG3 vrom the triepod, for short canges of position. Yust lift Up the hole think with 2 Persons.
5. I never Set my range of fire, in degrees. The aquad commander Just gave me my borders by pointing in the earea.
6. diggin in is a prozess. First no Cover, than a foxhole, a stand with No headcover, stand with cover, stand with a 60 degre shelter, full sheltered MG post.
7. the MG3 requier a 3 man team for optimal working. 1 gunner, 2nd gunner with 2 MG3 ammo boxes, the spare barrel and the triepod. 3nd gunner with the ammo Rag of min. 6 MG3 ammo boxes(per Box 300rounds). Sometimes the squadleader ist near by and commands the MG. 3nd gunner ist the worst job you have 20-25kg on equpment, plus the personal weapon and belongings.
We as airborn Infantry was in a mobile role. So we carryd the ammo in ouer bagpacks(Berghaus Vulkan) and have to operate the MG with a 2 men crew. But we learnd the more WKII MG taktik.

If you are bulding a plant MG position, use logs with min. 10cm diagonal and min 50cm eart on top. The fighting compartment have to BE in a min 60 degree angle to the other compartments. Make youre fontal cover strong as possible. If it's dry, use a cover for the ground to prevent dust If you shoot the weapon. In konkret pillboxes Cover the inner Site of the walls, with wood. IT IS mutch warmer in Winter and reduces the noise.

I like the Japanese idea of mixing grass seed in sand used for the sandbags if they are digging in for a lengthy stay. Seeds grow making for natural vegetation hiding the mg pit

Great video. It can be argued that the exit of the firing position should be coverd by some material like cloth/a blanket or another poncho to avoid the light contrast between the dark fighting position and the bright background. This contrast can be seen at 16:39 and can give the the fighting position away.

I don't own a machine gun but its always nice to go over the drills. People forget about the basics too often, its not always about sexy running and gunning but a hardened position even done hastily is good idea when the situation permits. We dug in a few times when building up our COP in Iraq, so this stuff still has a place.

As someone who loves military history this is really interesting. Drills like this go back much farther than a lot of people might think. Roman artillerymen, with their ballistae, had similar considerations and built excellent emplacements for their weapons. The engagement ranges, technologies, and uniforms may have changed but the principles really haven't

Talked to a WW2 vet from the eastern front once, he said that the distance between the guns muzzle and the ground should be no more than one hands breadth. Keeps the silhouette lower. Great video!

I can recall my days AG as a private in the 82nd on a field exercise. It was just like this video for sure! I remember the 3am call up, weapons draw and then 10 hours on green ramp. Of course the 4 hours on the C130 being tossed around all for a 45 second ride (the lines at Disney were shorter) and then the 10 mile stroll thru the woods to our ambush point. Getting the order to dig in (and of course it started to rain) and digging a fighting position. Once in position and taking a breather getting the order to move 100 meters only to dig in again. Ahhh... the good ol days!

Excellent video, well done! The only thing you left out was the part where as soon as they are done preparing their position, they hear the following:

“Listen up, prepare to move out…”
