Yes, there is a really good reason: it is more robust, if you interest rows or columns and adjust the structure of the spreadsheet COLUMNS will still give correct result and COLUMN will not. My New book Ctrl + Shift + Enter: Mastering Excel Array Formulas has a whole section on this.
