What is a rebar detector? Why it is used. How it is used. What we can get from that?

The rebar detector is also called the cover meter or rebar locator. This is a digital instrument that can be used very easily without knowing much technical stuff.

It is widely used to locate the reinforcement in the structural elements. Since this is a nondestructive testing method, there is no damage to the structural member like we do in visual inspection where we expose the reinforcement.
It provides an indication of when it found the reinforcement. Based on the indication, we can mark the reinforcement. Most of these types of instruments can be used to find cover for the reinforcement and the spacing of the reinforcement.

The built-in sound and blinking light indicator are used to find the rebar locators. When it is close to the reinforcement the sound increases. With that, we can find the location of the rebar. In addition, we can use the measurement of the cover meter also to locate the rebar correctly.

Most of the indicators have a digital display. It shows the distance between the rebar and concrete surface. The smallest distance is the cover to the reinforcement.

This is a very cost-effective method that can be used to locate the reinforcement. When we need to assess the condition of the structure and when we do not have the information on the construction drawings, the spacing of the rebar could be determined with this method.

Especially, when it is required to calculate the structural capacity of a slab or any other element, knowing the arrangement of reinforcement is important.
