A tribute to The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson, who with lyricist Tony Asher composed "God Only Knows" for the 1966 album, Pet Sounds. This version of "God Only Knows" by The London Symphony Orchestra is from the CD, Symphonic Rock - American Classics. This version was also played at Beach Boys' concerts in the late 1970's and early 1980's as the band was entering the stage. The lights were turned down but you could still see images of the band walking onto the stage; the song was blaring through the speakers and the announcer said, 'Ladies and gentlemen, from Hawthorne, California, America's band, The Beach Boys!" Then the lights suddenly came on and the guys were in place with their instruments. It was a very exciting experience.

This is the greatest popular song melody from the 60's ever written. Brian Wilson is a musical genius. I cry every time I hear it.

Beautiful, touching liked the ones as young boys. I'm so happy that Brian found a woman who is able to give him the happiness that he so richly deserves.

Makes me feel like a drone, gliding over the fiords of Norway, or the Grand Canyon, USA. Or heaven.

God Only Knows - famously known as one of the finest works not only from The Beach Boys themselves but also in the history of modern music, still lingers on my mind forever just as the last chorus remains so.

There are legions of points as to why I chose this as a favorite, but besides the apparent cliches, I would start with the first line of the song ‘I may not always love you.’

Imagine writing a song of love. If you were the writer, you must have known the importance of the first line. There is a way to show the amount of love that I have towards you, like all the other artists blindlessly do so, but the cleverest way to start the song is just to be raw, unaffectionate, and unpretentious, in other words, being completely shy.

That’s the point where people (me) can finally relate themselves (myself) to the music of love. Do I say ‘I may not always love you’ because I am not sure of my love for you last forever? Well - hell no. Paradoxically, that line can only be uttered when I am truly in love.

The contradiction of the word “may” and “always” mixed within the beautiful harmony - delicately shows the nervous, yet delicate, and sincere love.

Musically, there are somewhat unnatural parts - but let’s not numerate how unique and unnatural the chord progression is, but just jump to the last chorus section (roughly starts at 2:09). There are 4 voices melded together, but I always thought of the high tone (what I’d be~ without) and middle tone (god only knows), were off-harmony, a dissonance.

Those two voices always sounded to me like 0.8 and 1.2, so it may sound like a dissonance, but if they are all together, they nonetheless ended up being the perfect 1. Those four harmonies and French horn slicking the vocal along it definitely make the sound that I found most beautiful ever. It truly is the most beautiful song in my life.

The singer keeps remaining more or less passive attitude, ‘god only knows what I would be without you.’ By just keep quoting, god only knows, instead of urgently saying that you are the love of my life cliches, it continues somewhat bystander position. However, again, the most beautiful part of truly being fallen in love is - just being completely shy.

Such a beautiful version and shows the complexity of Brian's musical compositions which often get lost in his vocal arrangements
