United Airlines CRJ550

In order to provide upgraded service on short routes, United Airlines worked with Bombardier to develop a new airplane, the CRJ550. Today, GoJet Airlines inaugurated service on the planes. I was on the first CRJ550 flight to my home airport, Piedmont Triad International Airport (GSO).

The CRJ550 is really just a CRJ700 with fewer seats, but United Airlines used the opportunity to completely redesign the 50 passenger regional jet. The CRJ550 offers passengers the choice of First Class, Premium Economy, and Economy. Passengers in all classes of service on the CRJ550 have the opportunity to keep their roll-aboard bag with them in the cabin, forgoing the need to gate check a bag, which has always been required on these planes in the past.

In this video, we’ll compare the most common 50 seat regional jet, the CRJ200 to this innovative new CRJ550. I’ll give you my opinions, but more importantly, I hope you’ll share your thoughts about the CRJ550 in the comments section. I can’t wait to see what you think of this new airplane.

Here's iTripReport's video about the "true" inaugural flight to Harrisburg:

Great review Jeb. I live in a small midwestern town that United services with a few CRJ200 and a once a day mainline A319. We avoid the CRJ like the plague but sometimes have to take it due to work schedule and family engagements...etc. It would be a welcome addition to have the CRJ550 replace some of those flights if not all eventually.

I'm an infrequent flyer and my experience with the CRJ200 has been on 2 short regional flights from LNK to ORD for the connection to MCO and Walt Disney World, so I was happy to be on my way and could easily ignore any shortcomings. The Bombardier CRJ550 looks nice though.

Love the CRJ550! Don’t forget the beautiful Airbus A220 (C series) built from the same manufacturer Bombardier!

Hi Jeb! Flight attendant here (who doesn’t have to work this plane). While the plane is nice looking, A LOT of flight attendants are upset with this configuration. As you said yourself, it’s a lot of work for one person to do. I don’t know the validity to this but I had someone tell me it’s the only plane in the world with one flight attendant and two cabins. Additionally, I’ve had a few say it’s tacky for first class passengers to self serve; that it takes out the ‘class’ in “first class.” In this configuration it’s much needed though so first class passengers don’t have to wait forever for the flight attendant to serve them additionally drinks/snacks.

I agree with others saying that one flight attendant working this isn’t right. This new plane is beautiful and I love the carryon capacity. I just feel bad for the one flight attendant. :(

Aside from this, there’s lots of changes coming to United and I hope to see your reviews on them!

Agree with others. Great work Jen! I was on this flight and thoroughly enjoyed my experience. Great legroom and service. For the first flight of this plane to GSO it was a great overall experience. Other airlines that use these planes should look into this!

Was looking forward to this video! I got really excited for you when I saw the UA announcement that the 550 would be serving Greensboro

Looks cool! But the very best thing about sitting near the front of a CRJ is how incredibly quiet it is. You barely hear the engines. Not true at the back, though

I work on the CRJ 900 as Cabin Crew and this looks super cool! Indeed, 1 flight attendent for 50 passengers is a lot to do on a short flight. Sometimes we struggle with 90 passengers on a 30 minute flight and we're even 2 in the cabin. And sometimes we also have to eat on those super short flights. Anyway, excellent video! This CRJ550 looks great!

Very nice Jeb! Didn’t know United was starting this service. Back when I was a United Station Manager the talk was the CRJs would all be parked and they would expand to all EMB 170s. What a difference 4 years makes!

Yo! That CRJ came to riddle before it came out to the public, lucky to be on it. The interior is really nice!

Hey jebs. I really love your videos. I flew for the first time in June from Tallahassee to Atlanta then from Atlanta to Nashville. It’s really an experience and since then that’s all I’ve been doing is watching vids of planes ✈️

As someone who does almost all his flying on CRJ900, ERJ-145 and other regionals: this is a welcome upgrade. I loathe that I fly regionals constantly because the experience is always terrible, but that's what I get for having Charlotte as my closest hub.

The guy at 1:25, behind Jeb, is like, "some weirdo guy talking to a camera like those vloggers on youtube about the airplane he was just on." His face is great.

Favorite part of the video is 4:42 when you showed the impressive lineup of international tails at T5
