Growing Jabuticaba (Brazilian Tree Grape) from Seed | 0 - 150 Days

Today I’ll be showing you the process of growing Jabuticaba (Brazilian Tree Grape) from seed over a 5 month period. These cauliflorus trees grow a grape-like, purplish black fruit directly off the trunk of the tree which can be eaten raw or used in jams, juices or wine. These exotic and tropical trees are somewhat hardy, able to survive to about -6 degrees Celsius (21 Fahrenheit) and grow well in containers. This means it is possible to grow the fruit tree in colder areas. In the video I talk about how these plants create polyembryonic seeds where you get multiple plants for every seed you plant - pretty amazing!
Other names: Plinia cauliflora , the Brazilian grapetree , jaboticaba or jabuticaba, it’s in the family Myrtaceae, native to Minas Gerais, Goiás and São Paulo states in Brazil.

I made wine, conserve, and dessert wine from my jabuticaba couple years in a row. Highly recommended. Missed out one year when the tree didn't fruit though!

I used to love to harvest jabuticaba whenever I could!
It might be weird tasting the first time, but after you get used to it, it's addictive!
Cheers from Brazil 💪🏻👏🏻👏🏻

They are delicious. The blooms are intoxicatingly addictive. And the fruit is scrumptious. Very hardy. Through drought and flood. They make a nice wine and tasty cordial. We have two at the top of our driveway. They are very beautiful. 🇦🇺 Thanks for sharing this. I’m about to find some seeds. They are fruiting now, after this long saturating summer here. We are subtropical but our winters get very cold here in the ranges Nth NSW. We have the occasional frosts. They grow beautifully. They love the full sun though.

I’d totally love to see an update on some of the old trees before you went dark on YouTube such as the ice cream bean and coconut palm etc and how that weird ice cream bean plant turned out

I just LOVE jabuticaba 😍😍😍😍 I hope yours grow up nice and give you lots of fruits. It’s definitely one of the most spectacular tasty fruits. A cool fact about it is that, back in the past, this trees were so appreciated and beloved that it was commonly cited in the testaments. So, sometimes you could get a full grown jabuticaba tree as an inheritance, inside a property that was given to someone else. And according to the laws you had to be allowed access to the tree and had full rights over its harvest… hahahaha that happened also because this trees, when grown from seeds, usually takes more than 30 years to yield the first harvest (at least the old varieties). I hope yours start producing a lot sooner. You can always use the grafting technique to shorten this time…

Im loving to follow your food forest saga… hehehe thanks for sharing the content.

I bought a Sabara jaboticaba seedling online from Etsy a week ago and the seller also threw in a free red Surinam cherry plant!

Jaboticabas are delicious. I have 28 plants in my farm. They take a long time to start to have fruits.

I enjoyed your video! We live in Florida but have planned a trip to New Zealand in January 2025. What part do you live in? I am trying to learn more about gardening. Our sons live in Hawaii on The Big Island and they love to plant native trees, basically living off of the land. I brought home some seeds from their trees such as Liliquio, Rolinia and Jabodacava and I am wondering how to prepare the seeds for the best germination.
