Can flu cause Pneumonia? Definitely. Most of the time 90%of the time flu influenza can cause some viral infections and it is self-limiting without any treatment also it can improve on its own with symptomatic treatment. Few patients need antivirals. So patients can get secondary bacterial infections especially staphylococcal infections or they can get pneumonias with the streptococcus and all. Flu by mix because of the airway breach since it affects the airways and they are more susceptible to staphylococcal infections especially with H influenza they can cause staphylococcal pneumonia. Sometimes it can be life-threatening and it can cause severe pneumoatocoele, pneumothorax complications empyema, serous otitis media, all those things can happen with staphylococcal infections and flu per se viral infections per se can cause pneumonia and they may present bilateral pneumonias which can be life-threatening, affecting oxygenation and they may just require 1 or 2 liters of oxygenation and some people because of the strange regions they may progress faster and 7th or 8th day. These are the complications which can happen with the flu. Flu pneumonias are common. They may get secondary infections. Sometimes they go for multi-organ dysfunctions and death is very less. Less than 4% of the chances is there. That's why we tell them to take vaccination. Atleast the severity of the disease will not be seen and they will not die much and people know about the flu very well and every year flu vaccinations is a preventive modality and pneumonias are definitely common with flu and it has the incidence of come down because we have a specific treatment for influenza and we have vaccinations which can cover for one year that's about flu.
