My daughter got a toy bow from the movie brave and had been shooting suction cup arrows into the widow non-stop ever since. I figured this meant it was time to get her something a little more efficient. Now all she wants to do is shoot with me and has even asked to make her own bow. Me = Proud Daddy :)

That is absolutely adorable! My daughter is 7 months old now and I look forward to introducing her to viking fighting. With my piqued interest in bows, mainly thanks to you I might add, I forsee perhaps something like this in the future as well. =)

Just thin the limbs right out, don't worry about string follow, just get the little ones shooting :-) I've made some bamboo bows for 6-8 year olds that turned out around 11-15lbs depending on the kid, they could cope with those but I could make them less poundage. They take some set being so thin limbed, but they'll still fling a kid size wooden shafted arrow 50m (45yards) no worries if shot at 45 degrees. More than enough for straightish shooting out to 15-20m.

good to get em started early eh mike, all i will say is let her take her time. i went to a range once and met theese two girls one 10 and the other 8 i was shooting next to em and the 10 yearold was ok by herself but the 8 yearold was being watched by her mother like a hawk and she was writing down every score and she was getting 9-10 consistently yet her mom just kept telling her to do better! she was shooting way better than me. but your a really good dad getting her into the sport early

0:28 - 0:32 Aww, this is too cute! And I'm somewhat surprised you didn't make a bow for her. :D Anyhow, too awesome. And oh, I didn't know you had a daughter. Too cool.

I was going to ask this question, and now seems the perfect time. How do you downscale a bow for a kid? I tried making one for my 6-year old, but even working with 1/4"x1" red oak, it still seems too heavy a draw weight for him. Shortening the limbs down to his size seems to have offset the lower draw weight from the thinner limbs.
