Qatar suspends its mediation between Israel and Hamas over lack of 'seriousness' | DW News

Qatar has paused its mediation efforts for a Gaza cease-fire and hostage release, calling for more commitment from the militant group Hamas and Israel, the foreign ministry announced on Saturday. The Gulf state, which has hosted Hamas's political leaders since 2012 with US support, has been engaged in prolonged diplomacy to end the conflict that began with Hamas's terror attack on Israel on October 7, 2023. Talks, also involving Cairo and Washington, have stalled repeatedly since a brief truce in November 2023, with each side blaming the other for the deadlock.

Qatar can't be a mediator and at the same time commanding the war in Gaza on her soil. Therefore, to save her reputation, Qatar has to exhibit some kind of impartiality.

It’s really worrying for those still held hostage in Gaza. Without Qatar’s involvement, it feels like the chances of any deal happening are even more uncertain. Hopefully, if things shift, they might come back to the table.

Neither side has had any intention to compromise from the first day of the war. Any 'expert' who claims (1) that the deaths of Hamas leaders has made negotiation more difficult--when those leaders showed absolutely no sign of negotiating terms remotely acceptable to Israel; (2) that given (1), the participation of Qatar or any other third party not willing or able to prevent arms deliveries or intervene directly was of any importance at all; and (3) that Hamas has any intention of 'releasing all hostages', when they know what will follow if they do, and the number of dead ones comes out, is not an expert. Hamas is counting on international pressure to neuter Israel, and is happy to get as many of its own civilians killed as necessary to accomplish it. Israel will not accept a Gaza Strip governed by an organization devoted explicitly to the destruction of Israel. Hamas has pushed the narrative of Gaza as a prison, and now the Israelis are about to give that reality to them. Neither side is willing to give in, and Qatar is in no position to force concessions from anyone.
