Music in the East is a means of communication for our emotion, that s is why we establish an emotional bond with our listeners, we share our souls with them...in the West music is entertainment that helps the passing of time mostly...describing a view or a story, not opening up of a heart. Should we adopt that blindly? That s what will happen if we do not understand these differences and if we do not learn the modes//dromoi well...each dromos expresses a certain emotion and can help heal our soul. There is even a therapeutic system using these modes or dromoi or makams....

Yes, everybody is fighting to acquire and show speed...however, there are not too many players showing knowledge of more than 20 modes(dromoi). What do we do about that? In eastern music the interval of a fifth( the quinta)is rarely used because the melody is developed in a tetrachord then in another tetrachord...lately there are singers in Greece who use the vibratto without understanding that they hit microtones in a disordered manner...a thing that a psalt who knows Byzantine music would never do. Listen to Kazantzidis, listen to Fotini Mavraki...is knowledge of tradition dying? The Westerners are using only major and minor and use the cycle of fifths as the only guide to modulation(except in jazz). Should Greek.music become poor from lack of knowledge? Nobody knows Müstear and Nikriz anymore...Garip Hijsz...
