In this quick install and review video, I take a look at Elementary OS. Elementary is an Ubuntu-based distro that features its own custom desktop (Pantheon) and a bunch of custom-built apps. It is attractive and easy-to-use---perfect for the new-to-Linux user!

When you add elementary tweaks you have even more functionality. I like working in elementary because it gets me away from all the tweaking I do in other distros. You raise a good point that you can give this to your mom or grandmother and they can just use it. Very nice distro and excellent video!! 😀

Impressive. I also notice the top bar text and icons change color based on wallpaper.

Very polished and well thought out distro, the thing is it's very restrictive for any user level except the casual ones which they obviously don't use linux, don't get me wrong, this is the distro i have installed on my second drive but it needs a lot of tweaking to be tolerable

You should checkout the workspace management of elementary, and shortcut keys, these are the two areas the distro jumps from amazing to awesome

Speaking as a former Mac user, we could right click if we bought our own non-Mac mice so it was far from prohibited on our machines, and even without one there was a way you could get around the right-left click issue but it's been too long since I've used a Mac I'm starting to forget how it was done. But Mac OS X wasn't as low on on features and functionality as some of the eOS proponents seem to think, especially before Jobs died. :)

[ Smiles ] Elementary OS is cool-looking. However, by default, it does not support PPAs (One would need to install a special package in order to utilise that functionality).

This distro gets a lot of hate, mostly because Linux ‘enthusiasts’ don’t understand the target user for Elementary.
Most computer users want a system which just works reliably, doesn’t need lots of configuration and feels familiar. Nice to see balanced review.

Nice overview. I wish you'd always shown how well distributions implement dark themes. Some distros completely ignore to include the dark themes.

So if Elementary and Deepin and LinuxMint where on 3 separate laptops/desktops and I was told pick only one but that is what you must use for the next year I would be hard pressed to choose one they all 3 have really nice polished UI's and have strengths and weaknesses. Nice review!

I use Elementary OS: I have to admit that it needs a LOT of work to become a functional daily driver. That comes with pros and cons. Firstly, it might not be optimal for new users, but their idea is to be minimal even in their installation.
It needs at least "Software & Updates" that you can find in their app center and Elementary Tweak that you can install after adding the appropriate PPA. I don't personally understand why they didn't include the tweak tool in the OS but it is a choice.

I think as Operating System it comes with very few apps in their repository, but it is meant to be enriched with PPAs from the Debian/Ubuntu repositories. I can understand how that can be frustrating.

Why I use it as my daily driver? I find that its way Workspaces are dynamically creating when running full-screen apps, and its graphical appeal make it for quite a unique distro.
I personally would have liked the team to shift from Ubuntu LTS to a more bleeding edge Kernel release but I also understand their priority for stability.
