In Season 13, Episode 10 of Shark Tank, Brian and Earl Cole pitched their company, The Smart Tire Company. They asked for $500,000 in exchange for a 2.5% stake in their business, hoping to change the transportation world with their unique airless tires. Made from advanced materials used by NASA, these tires never go flat and are designed to last longer than regular ones. Their goal is to reduce the huge amount of waste caused by old tires and make transportation safer and more eco-friendly.
The Sharks loved the idea but were concerned when they found out each set of tires would cost $2,500 to $3,500. They thought it was too expensive and couldn't see how the business could succeed at that price. The Sharks admired the technology but felt the company was too new for them to invest. Instead, they suggested Brian and Earl consider licensing their tire technology to bigger manufacturers.
Although the founders left without a deal, The Smart Tire Company didn’t give up. They’ve made progress since the show, with plans to release airless bike tires priced at around $150. While the products aren’t on the market yet, The Smart Tire Company is working hard to bring them to life and make a positive impact on the future of transportation.

The SMART Tire Company is still around and looking for investors. In 2023, they started taking preorders for their METL bike wheels through a Kickstarter campaign. Big car companies like Kia and Hyundai noticed SMART Tire and made deals with them. Even though they haven’t released a product yet, they need to raise more money to keep going. Over 10, 000 customers are waiting for the METL bike wheels. It’s going to be a pricey project, but maybe the founders will follow Kevin O’Leary’s advice and license their technology. The company is worth more than $54 million.

No grip, high rolling resistance, heavy. Longevity? Reliability? If the inventor had a little common sense he would have asked for real cyclist’s opinion.

The "Moon Buggy" has those tires.
They stole a 1960s idea from NASA...

Amongst other issues, what happens when dirt, mud and other debri gets packed into the mesh "tire"? Tire balance is only one of your major problems.

Old tires aren't always just waste. RMA is used in multiple states. It tends to last longer and reduce road noise compared to standard asphalt.

Tires aren’t just there to roll. They need to handle different climate conditions and terrains. They need to be able to expand and contract at any moments notice; take sudden impact with minimal deformation. Last off all, maintain their integrity under various conditions. This is why rubber is still going to be around for a long time.

How is this any different from Michelin airless tires?

Last longer than vulcanized rubber?

When it rains or snows, the real question is will it spin the vehicle/bike or grip the road?

Clearly neither of them ever spoke to an engineer about this idea. If any of them actually have engineering degrees their universities should withdraw them.
