Great video...Nylon Paracord does not do "jack shite" for a repair or for a prophylactic means of keeping a handle from splitting as it is way too stretchy. Paracord wrapping is nonsense unless you want to just store it there or for a "grip." Traditionally the head would be modified by a blacksmith with a handle shield, or you can wrap it with wire, or in modern materials such as a spectra no-stretch polyamide cord/sting of some type. Traditionally it was done with sinew and leather which can be both a functional repair and/or a strengthening. It should be noted that in time with these "strengthenings" of any type, leather or iron, you will get a concentrated "shear failure" at the head and handle union which begins interstitially out of site and the head just comes off...Thanks again for what you share in "debunking" the morainic...

I use a couple layers of duct tape lol, we had rubber things on our long splitting axes, or tape again to “fix it “ if it happens to crack lol, extra cordage is nice tho

I think it depends on the size of the axe and what you're doing with it. I do not use it as an over-strike guard personally but I use it for a grip area when I want to use a hatchet for smaller wood processing and carving. Especially when I'm not wearing gloves. Obviously not as common to do now days since folks are rocking larger fixed blades for that. A boys axe would probably be the largest I'd wrap, any larger and it doesn't make sense to me. Worth pointing out what she's rocking is a "tomahawk" style hatchet so it shouldn't be seeing too much force/abuse if used appropriately.

Im from a tradesman's background and the amount of grief I would have gotten for wrapping the top of my hatchet in paracord in a nice pattern doesn't bare thinking about! It looks just close enough to makrame to set them off. These days more people know what a paracord wrap is so i might escape with just being asked if I've brought some knitting too the once! Ah, those were the days!!!😂

I've always assumed it was a temporary "fix" until you got home to replace the handle. Thanks for the video!

I was camping at my Uncle's farm in January this year. At the camp site area he left out a splitting axe. it was in rough shape. bent handle, long splinters ( about 4 inches) on the handle running up to the head, with a loose head.
I managed to fix the loose head (by banging ANOTHER nail in). I didn't have any glue. I tried to make some milk glue with the camping stuff I had. Failed. The milk/casein glue was made with 100ml of my UHT milk, some tomato sauce (vinegar content), then wood ash/water solution for the alkali. The milk boiling process didn't work. I was left with a pink/grey mess.
Anyway, the only way to sort out the splinting head was to whip it with some paracord. I did a pretty good job. Sharpened up the bit a little and put some baby oil on the handle (I was using that for sharpening my knives.
My cousin liked the axe job and thanked me for it when he found it. Said I added years to the axe.

Later on, I thought of my other make shift glue options. Pine resin (but the only pines available dint have any I could access. Another option would have been polystyrene (from my supermarket steak) mixed with petrol from the car. that might have worked. Didn't think of it at the time.

I wrap my hatchet where I hold it with jute twine. spayed it with some fabric glue.
It was a lil slippery, nice soft comfy grip now

Wrapping definitely does not repair splits in the handle.

I always love you vids man. Every handle I have for my woodworking tools is covered in cordage. You are absolutely correct. It is a pain in the a$$ keeping the cordage from slipping around during use without having to periodically reweave everything. It's a good idea on it's face, but sometimes I'd rather just have a hank of cordage in my loadout.

A lot of preventing a split is in the choice of the grain of the handle. Splits will generally follow the grain. And taping or lashing (wrapping with paracord) is only a patch. Also I wouldn't use paracord. It's nylon and nylon stretches, it wont effectively brace the split. Use Dacron or any of many others that have close to zero stretch.
If you're wrapping for grip, use a pattern that spirals up the handle. Like slightly offset overhand knots every revolution(makes a raised spiral). Again, nylon stretches and may loosen at an inopportune time.
I tried leather bootlaces at one time. Looked good, stretched like crazy when wet. More for decoration than use.

if you have wood its always a good idea to wrap your chopper or the consequences can be terrible !

Better off using duct tape to stabilize the handle, apply it tightly and with several wraps it will hold for quite a long time

Gee whizz, once again I am doing it all wrong. I thought you nursed a split handle with bailing wire. I did lace about 2 inches of cordage on my axe, I did it because all the cool kids were doing it 🤨and I wanted to be cool too 😎

I think I found one of your friends who calls out people doing dumb stuff with tools. He is calling out someone who hot glues their axe head to the handle.

Learn how to use an axe, and you have no problems, and you can use your paracord to something useful 😅
