Why Pixar's Elio Concerns Me Too...

Here we are again, somehow. I don't wanna become Pixar's biggest critic but... Elio just doesn't impress me.

It's clear right now that Pixar's prime has long gone past us. With the flop of Lightyear, cutting off employees, Elemental being marketed horribly and now a new teaser trailer for Elio... is it enough? Is this movie gonna bring Pixar up the ranks again? Since public opinion has been declining in recent years for Disney Pixar. I don't think so. I see basic jokes, simple stories, and repetitive tropes from a writing and directing perspective that seems so.. unearned. A script where no one is trying. Since modern day Pixar feels so corporate and safe. Maybe I'm wrong! I hope to be, since ironically enough I am rooting for Elio. Pixar is now an underdog studio. Or at least that's how it seems. This Is Why Pixar's Elio Concerns Me...

...I assume Elemental is bad, right? It looks bad. And it doesn't come out in the UK for another 2 weeks. C'mon, Pixar...

I haven't seen Elemental yet. Is it good? Doesn't come out in the UK for another 2 weeks...

I love the settings, the alien designs, and the premise. My only complaint is that the plot seems to hinge entirely on a liar reveal, and as we all know, those are usually pretty bad. Here's hoping, though.

Remember when The Incredibles’ teaser trailer was just a montage of Mr. Incredible having a little trouble putting his suit on and Pixar managed to magnificently deliver the movie’s basic concept, visual style, humor, and family centered message, all in less than 2 minutes? Boy, have times changed…

to give the "no thank you" joke some defence; I think it can work if the character they're leaning into for Elio is the "super polite, innocent, obedient kid" type. you know, the kind of kid who accidentally steals something from a store and thinks he's gonna go to jail for it. less intended to be "funny", and more intended to be in-character and cute/charming?

I will say that this movie already has me more interested than I've been in Elemental just from presentation alone tbh

I think Pixar just has a problem with trying to make their movies more of a visual spectacle than a cohesive and complex story. "Wow look! A world of skeletons!" "Wow look! A world of elements!" "Wow look! A world of aliens!" It gets tiresome and hollow really quickly. Plus it doesn't help that impressive 3D animation isn't hard to come by anymore and that Pixar refuses to be more stylized than it currently is.

Encanto did actually make sense as a title. It means love and sounds like enchanted (same root word) so it refers to both the magic and love of the family members. It's a shame such a clever title was hidden by similar boring titles.

Im not a whole fan of "liar reveal" plots, but I will say the "No, thank you!" says a lot about who Elio is as a character. At that one line, I knew I was looking at a character who is polite, kind, and, most of the time, honest. I have a feeling this is the first time hes told a really big lie like this, but its all speculation until the movie comes out.

Tbh Elio’s premise has a lot more going for it than Elemental did (in my opinion) and the visuals are also way more interesting. This film has potential, but also the only nitpick I have with the premise is the whole “liar revealed” trope. Why can’t it be that the aliens chose Elio to be the ambassador to humanity because while he might be bad at connecting with other humans (because he’s neurodivergent or at least coded to be that way) he has the potential to make connections between wildly different species of aliens? IDK, it’s Something to think about.

The "No thank youuu" line is so cute imo, makes him seem like a timid, shy polite little boy who's not used to doing anything he's not meant to. I think it actually displays his character quite well, very quickly.

I think the main reason why Elemental isn’t wowing that many people is because the formula of “what if [BLANK] had feelings?” Is becoming harder and harder to humanise, and the idea of philosophical elements having feelings is just one abstraction too far for most people. Toys, monsters, and cars all have their own way of conveying personality and emotions through design and concept alone. Lightning McQueen for example is a race car, which bleeds into his personality in an organic and believable way. Water doesn’t have a legible personality. Air doesn’t have a legible personality. Elements having feelings doesn’t work, since they don’t convey feelings in on way or another.

Fun Fact: The rabbit on Elio's phone case is the same rabbit from Pixar's short film "Burrow".

I'm not really in the hype train, but you gotta give Pixar credit for still coming up with new ideas. Visually amazing and Elio talking with his mom was so adorable. Can’t wait to see the full story unfold.

While I'm probably not gonna see it, I will say that I do appreciate the fact that most of the alien designs look very, well, alien.

Top 3 movie tropes that need to stop being in movies;

1: Third act conflict
2: Death fakeout
3: Liar revealed

The problem I have with it is Pixar and Disney don't take any risks at all. They don't try to go beyond what is expected of animation and always go for "minor with big expectations" or "romantic couple". It doesn't feel like there's adventure for everyone anymore

Even though the animation is nothing new, everything else about it looks so good, that I don't think it matters. This has real potential to be Pixar's next slam dunk.

For 6:11 I will say that I’m pretty sure this is meant to be Elio being presented as neurodivergant. There are a few other moments in the trailer (specifically where he looks at the water and talking to his mother) that seem to suggest this. And if that is true then it’s likely to play a part in his story (probably feeling more accepted by the aliens than the humans he usually interacts with and the conflict that will generate with his mother)

I deeply appreciate the movie's sci fi leaning more into 60's pschedelia, as opposed to generic star wars stuff or whatever the heck Lightyear was. It reminds me alot of 'Wander over Yonder' and I am here for it.

I will say, the alien design in this movie looks pretty good! So many movie aliens are just humans with tentacles, so seeing some variety is nice

Tbh a better title for elio could be
"Elio Leader of Earth" or "Elio Earth's Hero"
