Climate Shifts and the Dark Ages

Показать описание
The Dark Ages, beginning around 536 AD, were marked by severe cold, with 536 being one of the coldest years in 2,000 years. Centuries of harsh climate gave way to a warming period in the 900s, enabling Scandinavian farming in Greenland. However, the 1340s brought agricultural failures, famine, and the bubonic plague, effectively ending the cathedral-building era.

The 500s were prime pond hockey years.
People like to gloss over the positives.

And as a European, my ancestors lived through the absolute worst of all of this, and it was a good thing. We are meant for the cold. It is our strength.

Randall is the best example of the fact that you don't need a college degree to be well read, intelligent, and a subject matter expert. His knowledge is so broad that he's made connections between different topics.

When I hear young people say times are too hard to have children, I want to remind them that without having children during hard times, most of us wouldn’t be here. Thank you, tough (amorous) ancestors! 😬❤

Those cold hard dark hungry days, months and years...
Waking up cold, toiling, and deciding to build some of the best cathedrals the world will come to know. What a mindset, what devotion to God

Thanks for bringing some history to people. Although I was inundated with history when in school I didn't know some of this. Don't know what's being taught now in schools or colleges. People seem ignorant of so much.

Most people don't realize that a volcanic eruption in 536AD was the cause of the Dark Ages (Strong scientific evidence shows that there was possibly 2 eruptions rather than just one. Time frame for the eruptions 536AD-540AD ). Whether it was caused by one volcano or two, the amount of sulfate and ash that was thrown into the atmosphere from the eruption caused the sky to go dark for well over a year without any sun. The climate turned bad and stayed that way for almost 500 years. It was cataclysmic world wide, and caused global famine. It truly was a horrible time to be alive.
Fun fact: History would have never had a Viking Age if it had not been for the volcanic eruption. Chaos from the downfall of the climate at that time is what birthed the Viking Age. God I love history... lol

Wish I could sit in on one of his lectures live. I could listen to him all day.

The so-called “Dark Ages” (5th–10th centuries) were a time of resilience and innovation, with monasteries preserving ancient knowledge, advancements like the heavy plow and water mills transforming agriculture, and the fusion of Roman, Christian, and Germanic traditions laying the groundwork for modern Europe. Far from stagnant, this era fostered local economies, early medieval art, and the spread of ideas that would ignite future progress

536 was the year a volcano went off and affected the qhole planet. 536 was also said to be the year King Arthurs reign came to an end

They are called the Dark ages because there is very little written record. The Romans had left their Empire and the locals reverted to their oral culture. Trade became limited because of no international currency until the spread of Christianity which brought reliable silver coinage. However it rebuilt itself into the basis of medieval Europe.

I remember a program several years ago, explored the 1330s period and found it corresponded with Chinese scripts of a massive explosion heard around 1332ish wich corresponds with what believed to have been a huge Volcano explosion in Indonesia, that lead to a Nuclear style winters for several years. They found trees from that time with virtually little growth for several years apparently. Yes with all the current climate cult panic, one volcano can upset the apple cart. Earth is Amazing.

Why was it deterioration. The high scholasticism of european universities or what about the carolingian renaissance. I dont think thats the case. Dark ages were times of innovation and discovery.
