The Republic is governed by the Constitution of India, which was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on November 26, 1949 and came into effect on January 26, 1950. The Constituent Assembly of India drafted the constitution while taking into account features of other countries' constitutions as well as the Government of India Act 1935. Some features of the Indian constitution are borrowed from a variety of sources.
