One point: St. Lucy's day was originally celebrated on the winter solstice (usually December 21/22), which _is_ the longest night of the year. Later, it was moved to the 13th to separate it from Christmas, which is celebrated (as Eve and Day) on the third day after the winter solstice.

I always love Lucia-tradition. When i was a kid whe went out and sang for all the neighbours. We had wraths on hour heads with red bands, and sometimes silverglitter if we could not make wraths. Sometimes, i think this may have something to do with roman traditions (vestals).
