I think something a lot of people miss is that the question isn’t “spray sunscreen over my makeup or rub in regular sunscreen cream” it’s “spray sunscreen over my makeup and disrupt it as little as possible but don’t get full benefits of the sunscreen or …don’t reapply at all.”

You left me with more questions than answers with this one, Doc.

True! But, here's the thing. How many people are really reapplying sunscreen OVER MAKEUP? I don't know anyone who is doing this, even though it's highly suggested. Imagine taking time to get your makeup, blusher, highlighter, whatever just right and then 2 hours later applying goop over all of that, rubbing it in as described. 95% of people aren't going to do it. If not a spray, maybe a powder or a wide-brim hat?

It’s certainly better than nothing. So, I spray, let it dry and then I do it a couple more times. It’s easy, otherwise I’m just not going to do it and that’s the honest truth. There are also better and worse SPF sprays on the market. I start with a high SPF knowing I’m not getting the full coverage but apply the spray multiple times and throughout the day. At the house, office and a bottle in my car.
Naked Sundays SPF+ is my fav

This just sounds like we need someone to develop a touch free sunscreen spray on purpose instead of shaming folks for not using the existing stuff correctly. Sometimes we need to just accept that something is better than nothing, especially when it comes to sun protection.

I never understood how to reapply sunscreen and not ruin your full face of makeup.. i just avoid the sun altogether.

Why people are relying on spf lotions only??? What about spf clothes?? Like wide brim sun hats, sunglasses and other upf clothes. It helps even better than any spf creams. As a makeup junky myself it is impossible to reapply sunscreen on the skin that fully “loaded” with makeup!!! 🤷‍♀️

What do you recommend for reapplying spf over make up. Any regular lotion spf will mess up your make up. Would love to hear a solution.

This is why I hardly ever reapply. I did find one spray at ulta that doesn’t burn the eyes and I figured it’s better than nothing.. but still disappointed

There are sunscreen sprays that are designed to be sprayed over the face and do no need to be rubbed in, such as Anthelios Invisible Mist SPF50 (Euro).

Dr. Dray what’s your opinion on sunscreen powder on the face as use for re-applying sunscreen? Love your channel! Thank you for educating us on all things for skin!

I use Anthelios Invisible Mist SPF 50. When I spray it on, I move to a corner, hold my breath, then spray and quickly leave the area to avoid inhaling it.

I use a sunscreen called once’ which is made by a company called boots here in the UK. It claims to last for eight hours so I put it on in the morning under my make up and feel pretty confident that I’m protected for eight hours. Realistically once you apply your make up, you are not going to take it off every two hours to reapply it, so what’s the answer? Yes, let’s be realistic about spray on sunscreen but let’s also be realistic that women are not going to remove their make up every two hours to reapply sunscreen.

Idk Garnier has this one aerosol spray that has instructions to spray directly at your face. I feel like it’s better than nothing cos it’s not like people are going to take off all their make up, put on sunscreen and reapply it. The only other option is a sunscreen powder and those don’t offer much protection either.

Here's a potentially realistic solution: for day-to-day make-up, do not use foundation, but use a tinted sunsceen (Elta MD or Paula's Choice work for me, but it would be great if they had more skin-tone inclusive options) and cream blush. It's easier to reapply sunscreen and cream blush - working carefully around any eye make-up (sunglasses to the rescue) than a full face of make-up over sunscreen.

Isn't the over-makeup sprays better than to never reapply sfp? Because that's my alternative.

I use spf 50 from La Roche Posay under makeup in the morning, but I'm not reapplying that during the day. And I'm not gonna do my hole makeup again just to reapply. Of course exceptions would be for at the beach or on a hike in the mountains etc, where I'm not using makeup.

I know people who have used sprays and still have gotten burned. I think it misleads most consumers into thinking they've applied sunscreen properly when they haven't.
